HOW TO PREPARE Brainstorm Focus on quantity not quality Prepare speech by either writing out entire speech or making notecards Practice practice practice and then practice some more
HOW MUCH TIME DO I NEED TO PREPARE? 5 hours of prep for every 10 minutes of speaking Practice practice practice 5 practice sessions bare minimum 10 practice sessions will make your presentation go smoothly
HOW LONG DOES MY SPEECH NEED TO BE? Calculate about 1:1 ratio of one handwritten page to one minute of speech EX: 8 handwritten pages=8 minutes of speech Make note cards Practice practice practice until you no longer rely on the note cards
KEEPING YOUR AUDIENCE INTERESTED Make presentation unique Include personal stories Use humor Can poke fun at yourself-not audience Use gestures Make eye contact 3-4 seconds Establish 3-4 positions of where you will move during your speech (walking patterns)
USE GOOD DICTION You have learned over 500 vocabulary words this year Don t fall victim to using slang or vague expressions Watch out for filler words EX: I like went to Home Depot and bought a lot of wood. It cost a lot.
DAY OF PRESENTATION Dress appropriately/Business attire: Slacks, button down shirt, dress shoes Long skirt, blouse, pantyhose, dress shoes Maintain eye contact with audience Use note cards No gum
