1) Writing in the margins, NOT highlighting. 2) Showing your thoughts about a text. 3) Helping you understand what you re reading. What is Annotation? & Why Use It?
-Connect connect to your personal experience, background knowledge, etc. -Clarify restate/write to simplify the author s point or the information -Question write a question about what you want to know or what you are confused about Ways to Annotate -Summarize sentence summary of what you read Written Annotations -Respond respond to the text, give your opinion or thoughts -Infer make an inference of what the author is saying -Feel state an opinion or feeling you have
or underline = main idea or key information ! = new or surprising information Circle or ? = confusing information or word I don t know Symbolic Annotations BK = background knowledge G.R.A.P.E.S. = connection to a G.R.A.P.E.S. category = connection to you or other info.
