Strategic Panning A strategic plan is a document used to communicate with the organization the organizations goals, the actions needed to achieve those goals and all of the other critical elements developed during the planning exercise. It is the road map for where you want to go over a period of time and identifies the actionable items that are needed to be successful and arrive at the final outcome.
Strategic Planning Components Introductory Statement - briefly describe why the strategic plan was developed and for what time period, plus the authors of the plan. Problem Statement - Some plans include a problem statement, which can outline key or discrete issues that need to be addressed. Background Statement - This section may provide information about the organization such as history, management structure, and supporting partners or agencies. Alternatively, you could use this section as a brief business statement - more of an elevator pitch - to concisely describe your business. SWOT Analysis - A SWOT analysis provides a foundation and context for developing strategy by examining the strengths and weaknesses within and organization as well as external opportunities and threats. Goals A strategic plan may include long-term as well as more short-term (monthly and quarterly) goals. Objectives should be measurable and broken down into actionable steps, and the action plan for each goal should specify who is responsible for implementing the strategy, a timeline for starting and ending the action, and how the outcome will be evaluated. Organizational Structure - Include this information if it s relevant to evaluate how your business or organization operates and is structured - from governing board to staffing. Vision - A vision statement should briefly describe what a company wants to achieve or become. This is one of the primary organizational tenets to consider, along with values and mission. Evaluation - Methods for evaluation should be spelled out in the strategic plan. This could include tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) and documenting the progress of action steps on an ongoing basis. Executive Summary - This final summary helps employees, investors or other readers quickly understand your plan. Values - These are the principles that an organization stands for and abides by. Many businesses create core value statements to guide company culture. Mission Statement - A mission statement describes the purpose of a business or organization. This is distinct from a vision statement because it is not a projected goal for the future.

One way to think about strategic planning is that it identifies any gaps between a current state and desired future state, and then dictates how to close those gaps. SP Process How to Get There How to get you from where you are to where you want to be. To that end, various factors are taken into consideration in order to formulate an effective plan. I begin with a SWOT group work and then an analysis of responses.
SWOT A SWOT analysis provides a foundation and context for developing strategy by examining the strengths and weaknesses within an organization as well as external opportunities and threats. These are always best in a group but can be sent electronically for input. The goal is to have leadership, staff and stakeholder involvement if possible. NMOte: No matter what type of strategic plan you are working on, using a template provides a simple and quick outline to organize your process, ideas and to assist in anlayzing the information into workable action items.
Example SWOT Template EXCEL Spreadsheet INTERNAL /EXTERNAL FACTORS STRENGTHS (+) WEAKNESSES ( ) THREATS ( ) OPPORTUNITIES (+) Continue National involvement to further involve ABON APRN practicing at full scope Board Diversity (4) ABME (2) Abililty to change and implement needed 'practice' during Covid ABON results known by other BONs Inaccurate 3rd party communication and challenges Barriers to APRN Full Practice Authority Advance social media presence X 2 ANRC Advocate for APRN cohesiveness APRN barriers
Lets review the Board Member 2021 SWOT
After the SWOT is completed: Review and identify common ideas and themes which may be used in developing possible actional items that will drive the work of the agency Goals - as a Reminder a strategic plan may include long-term as well as more short-term (monthly and quarterly) goals. Do not get hung up on 3-5 years. You will have successes along the strategic journey IDENTIFY POTENTIAL GOALS Remember as you develop objective s they should be measurable and broken down into actionable steps, and the action plan for each goal should specify who is responsible for implementing the strategy, a timeline for starting and ending the action, and how the outcome will be evaluated.
Once the SWOT is developed Brain-storming and Identifying Common themes Common Themes: Continue Collaboration ABN Action Items/Questions Ideas Rework Website, Revamp social media? communication plan and establish a campaign for nurses to include nursing shorage, all roles and FPA, JITS, Barriers, etc Reestablih the face to face educational programs twice per year. JIT for the Public on all roles and push to social media Revise rules to reflect the needed changes pertienet to Alabama Continue active involvement state and nationally Social Media increase/Website improvement Education: Ldr institute roll out, APRN advancement, VDAP, and Public Rule development: Model Education, simulation etc Continue Engagement
Identify Potential Goals/Objectives; Start Developing strategies and evaluation metrics (ABN SP worksheet) Goal 1. Objectives 1. Strategies a) Metrics Education ABN educational resources, programs, seminars and training support growth and development of the nurse, nurse leader, and education of the public on the various roles of the nurse. Develop a marketing campaign and roll out of the Leadership Institute for all nurses in Alabama and nation. Develop Just in Time Training (JIT) for the RN and LPN roles. Develop JIT for the 4 APRN roles. Develop JIT for FPA for the APRNs. Develop a Leadership Institute (LI) campaign and rollout plan. Establish, publish and springboard the ABN Center for Nursing Excellence. Roll out and implementation of the LI. Continued class development and revision of initial courses for the LI. Allow for all access and access for nurses across the country to participate in the LI.
You can start the work and have a point to begin from at first review of the SWOT data. Obtain INPUT from others to expand However, SP development with other is key to successful planning. The input from others ensures a well thought out plan and considers aspects of planning that you may have not. This allows for multiple diverse opinions, thoughts and views to be considered.
ABN Strategic Initiatives 2022-2026 BEGINNING DRAFT INTRODUCTORY STATEMENT The 2022-2026 strategic plan was developed from a SWOT analysis completed by Board Members, to identify strategic goals and objectives and strategies to move the ABN toward realizing opportunities and decreasing identified threats and weaknesses. The goals and objectives are further developed to enable the agency to operationalize the work of the Board. Review DRAFT BACKGROUND STATEMENT The previous strategic plan for 2018-2022 identified 4 priority goals to work toward and guide the ABN with further implementation of the new direction established by the executive officer, in 2015. The goals included were engagement, excellence in regulation, leadership, and initiative. The results and ABN work toward these four goals has improved the perception of the ABN as a regulatory entity and resulted in a regulatory excellence award for the Board from NCSBN, an award from CLEAR related to the new VDAP campaign initiative, and recognition from the AANP of the Executive Officer as CRNP 2020 advocate of the year for Alabama. These awards reflect the achievement and active engagement of the agency and staff throughout the current strategic plan period. However, results from the most recent SWOT Analysis from Board members, engagement, collaboration, education and initiative remain as a continued focus as the 2022-2026 plan is finalized and implemented. ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE The Alabama Board of Nursing (ABN) is a state agency in the Executive Branch of Alabama s State Government.
