MGT 30725 PROJECT MANAGEMENT LESSON 8: Conducted By: Dr. Madhu Fernando, PMP, DBA, MEng. PROJECT QUALITY MANAGEMENT 1
Project Quality Management Quality typically defines whether stakeholder expectations were met in the project.
Project Quality Management Theories Project Quality Management Theories Zero Defects by Philip B. Crosby Philip Crosby s theory on Zero defects says, Do it right the first time Prevention is the key here. Prevent the defect from occurring to lower cost and to meet conformance to requirement.
Project Quality Management - Theories Fitness for Use by Joseph M. Juran Fitness for use means the stakeholders and customers expectations are met or exceeded. It means Conformance to specifications that the project has produced what the project set out to produce is met or exceeded. The product or service produced should meet the quality expectations, and it should satisfy the real need.
Project Quality Management - Theories Fitness for Use by Joseph M. Juran Juran also differentiates quality from Grade. Some times products can be low in Grade that means less features but high in quality as it has produced what the customer expected
Project Quality Management - Theories Quality is a Management Problem Edwards Deming Deming suggests that as much as 85% of the cost of quality is due to management problem. Eg: if the management decides to buy low quality material, workers cant be responsible for the quality of the end product. He is the father of TQM, Total Quality Management. TQM says that the Process is the problem, not the people. There should be a continuous improvement in the process, and not just one time implementation of quality.
Project Quality Management - Theories Kaizen Approach Kaizan, in Japanese, means Continuous improvement. All team members and managers should be constantly watching for quality improvement opportunities. Improve the quality of the people first, then improve the quality of the products or service. Six sigma theory also focus on continuous improvement. It is a measurement based strategy no more than 3.14 defects per million. 99.99997%.
PROJECT QUALITY MANAGEMENT Project quality management uses the same processes and practices used in total quality management, in a project context. It involves three processes: Plan Quality Perform Quality Assurance Perform Quality Control
PLAN QUALITY Plan Quality Many organisations have a quality policy. However, when it comes to project level, whether the projects meet required quality standards can be a question. Quality is about prevention.
SEVEN BASIC TOOLS USED IN QUALITY MANAGEMENT 1. Cause and Effect Diagrams 2. Flow charts 3. Checksheets 4. Pareto diagram 5. Histograms 6. Control Charts 7. Scatter diagrams 10

PERFORM QUALITY ASSURANCE Quality should be assured throughout the project implementation with the process analysis and quality audits.
PERFORM QUALITY CONTROL Through out the project quality should be monitored and controlled to ensure the project is delivered according to the agreed requirements and standards. Control charts, pareto diagrams, cause and effect diagrams are some of the quality control techniques used in this process.
