  2. WHAT TO EXPECT Significant variability between Trusts Numbers of patients Numbers of team members System for tracking patients Busy Time pressured

  3. GETTING STARTED Familiarise yourself with the systems Excel Spreadsheet More sophisticated tracking systems Who to expect on your team SHO/F1 (Full day/twilight/night) SpR cover ?ward registrar Referral Processes ED if not you, you can always be consulted.. GP Wards/specialties ( Buddy ward system?)

  4. BEGINNING OF THE SHIFT Adequate, concise handover Sick patients Senior reviews (F1/PA clerkings) Those waiting to be seen Can be a disaster! Prioritise tasks and allocate Don t be tempted to take on too much! Introduce yourself to the hospital at night team

  5. DURING THE SHIFT Keep yourself free to review/advise Don t panic You WILL feel overwhelmed at times Monitor juniors delegate patients if busy See Mrs X, discuss with me and we will see together Don t worry about asking for help/advice Consultants are on call They WILL want to know

  6. ENJOY YOURSELF!

  7. FINISHING YOUR SHIFT Handover once again imperative Ensure your team (& you!) get off on time Especially post nights/weekends You will (usually) NEVER get through everything Patients handed over does NOT count as a failure!

  8. SUMMARY Remember you are now the registrar Do not clerk everyone! DELEGATE Familiarise yourself with systems and the team Don t be afraid to ask for advice Have FUN
