Effects of Exercise on Heart Rate - Batman's Experiment
Explore how exercise impacts heart rate through Batman's investigation on Robin's fitness levels. Learn about the changes in pulse rate and breathing rate during physical activity, and discover the reasoning behind these physiological responses. Join Batman in planning and conducting an experiment to understand the effects of exercise on the body.

Am I Fit? Part 2: Effects of Exercise, Planning an Experiment Lockdown Science with Miss Loughran
Lesson Objective (Aim): Understanding the effects of exercise on the body Learning Outcomes (Targets): 1. All: Recall that pulse rate and breathing rate change during exercise. 2. Most: Explain why pulse rate and breathing rate increase during exercise using some knowledge of respiration, breathing and circulation.
Batman In Training Unlike most superheroes, Batman has no Super powers to speak of. His ability comes from hard work and exercise. Thinking about these pictures, try to answer the following questions.
Batman In Training 1. What happens to Batman s heart as he exercises? 2. Why does the speed of Batman s heart change as he exercises? 3. At rest, how might your heart rate be different to Batman s resting heart rate? Try to explain your answer.
How does exercise affect heart rate? o Batman is training Robin to be a great crime fighter. o He wants to find out how fit Robins is. o Batman decides to investigate how Robin s pulse rate, heart rate and breathing rate change as he does exercise. Can you help Batman with his investigation?
How does exercise affect heart rate? Step one Make a prediction Prediction I predict that after exercise Robin s heart rate will... stay the same/goup/go down. I think this because...
How does exercise affect heart rate? Step two List the equipment Batman will need for his experiment
How does exercise affect heart rate? Step three Write instructions (a method) for Batman to carry out his experiment.
How does exercise affect heart rate? Step four State any safety issues Batman should take into account
Batmans Method Batman has come up with a method he could use, but he wants you to try it out for him!
Batmans Method 1. Measure the pulse of a partner. (The best place to do this is the wrist or neck.) Count how many times your partner s heart beats in 30 seconds. Times your answer by 2. This is the heart rate in BPM. Record this in the table. 2. Carry out exercise for 2 minutes! (The best way to do this is to jog on the spot) 3. Straight after the 2 minutes of exercise take your partner s pulse again for 30 seconds. Times it by 2. Record this new number in the table. Do this every minute for 5 minutes in order to get 5 readings.
Results Table Pulse rate after 2 minutes of exercise (BPM) 1 2 3 4 5 What happens to your pulse straight after exercise compared to 5 minutes after you have finished? Why do you think this is?
Being Fit o Fitness programmes help keep your body s organ system working properly. o The Circulatory system and the respiratory system work to provide muscles with glucose and oxygen during exercise. o All your cells use respiration to release energy. Glucose + Oxygen Carbon Dioxide + Water
Back to Batman o Now that you have trialled Batman s practical for him and collected some data it s now analyse time. o Analyse the results you have obtained and present them for Batman is an appropriate way. Analysis My heart rate stayed the same/wentup/went down after exercising. This happened because:
oxygen and glucose, which is carried in the quickly so my heart rate went My leg muscles were having to move more, so they were using up lots of .. blood. So my heart had to pump the blood more . energy. To make energy my muscle cells were carrying out up. respiration which needs
