EGI-ENGAGE: Implementing the EGI Vision EGI Vision: The Open Science Commons Researchers from all disciplines have easy and open access to the innovative digital services, data, knowledge and expertise they need for performing collaborative excellent research 2 www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323
EGI-ENGAGE: Implementing the EGI Vision Requiring the involvement of E-Infrastructures Data providers Research Infrastructures Competence Centres Digital services Data Knowledge & Expertise Instruments Future Plans 3 13/02/2015 www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323
Problems to address National dimension Incomplete national roadmaps for Research and e- Infrastructures with a few exceptions Lack of e-Infrastructure capabilities for multidisciplinary research in some countries Non organized landscape of multiple service providers and research communities no coordinated service provisioning Different access policies for user groups in each access E.g. Long tail of Science, SME/industry, education Fragmented national landscapes hinder the sustainability of infrastructures of European dimensions Future Plans 4 13/02/2015 www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323
Problems to address European dimension e-Infrastructure Commons not fully achieved yet Incomplete technical interoperability, different access policies the Commons economic principle of e-Infrastructures today is only applicable with GEANT, thanks to the funding scheme that allows coordinated resource management across Europe Different funding schemes for European e-Infrastructures can compromise persistency, going commercial is not a solution Lack of one backbone of European ICT capabilities E-Infrastructures and RIs should be components of the same research system Risk of unnecessary competition and duplication No schemes for cross-border procurement of services Co-development, user-driven development existing where bilateral agreements are in place Future Plans 5 13/02/2015 www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323
EGI-Engage - Objectives Ensure the continued coordination of the EGI Community Strategy, policy and business development, to continue and expand activities including the evolution of the EGI governance Evolve the EGI Solutions, related business models and access policies for the long tail of science, Research Infrastructures and industry and SMEs Bring new solutions to full maturity and tailor the solutions to the need of specific user groups Engagement with commercial service providers and consumers for the development and adoption of a common service marketplace 30 Months 8 MEuro 1169 PMs 42 Beneficiaries Offer and expand an e-Infrastructure Commons solution Security operations and AAI infrastructure, accounting, monitoring Discoverability of services through a European federated marketplace Cross e-Infrastructure access policies and business models Cross-border service procurement with e-Infrastructures and Research Infrastructures Engaging the EGI Community towards an Open Science Commons (http://opensciencecommons.org/) 6 3/2/2025 www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323
EGI-Engage - Objectives Implement the Knowledge Commons Open access to training, education material, coordinated user support effort Open access to scientific codes, and virtual appliances for repeatability of science Evolve the EGI Cloud towards a Open Data Cloud combining IaaS, PaaS, SaaS and open data publication, access and re-use Fostering re-use of open data User-driven innovation through a network of eight Competence Centres (BBMRI, DARIAH, EISCAT-3D, ELIXIR, EPOS, INSTRUCT, LifeWatch and environmental science) The EGI technical platforms will be evolved according to the needs of the user community and will be integrated with the services of other e-Infrastructures in Europe and world wide Engaging the EGI Community towards an Open Science Commons (http://opensciencecommons.org/) 7 3/2/2025 www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323
Activities 1/6 Evolve the EGI Solutions and the related business models with a differentiated approach according to each user group for greater sustainability and greater integration with other infrastructures in Europe and worldwide Cross-border procurement, involving RIs EGI Sustainability and governance Business development (pay for use, data market analysis for the big data value chain in a few sectors, PaaS business models, service market place) Involving a few SMEs, on industry and FAO Service management of federated services Service access policies for differet user groups (including long- tail) 8 www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323
Activities 2/6 Technical support to eight user communities and RIs on the ESFRI roadmap to foster the adoption of state-of-the-art services and evolve them according to their requirements. The support will be delivered through a network of Competence Centres with the participation of user communities, technology providers and NGIs/EIROs, OSG and Asia Pacific 26 proposals received, 8 selected BBMRI, DARIAH, EISCAT_3D, ELIXIR, EPOS, INSTRUCT and structural biology, LifeWatch, climate change and disaster recovery 9 www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323
Activities 3/6 Extend the capabilities of the EGI e-Infrastructure Commons Support of different levels of assurance in Authentication and Authorisation Consolidation and evolution of accounting towards the accounting of usage of new resources Tools for application and allocation of resources Operations of IaaS, PaaS and SaaS services on cloud New capabilities like a service marketplace supporting pay-for-use on-demand service provisioning and service discovery. 10 www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323
Activities 4/6 OBJECTIVES BBMRI: data and compute infrastructure that will allow a biobank federation for the storage of big data, parallel data analysis (EGI/EUDAT pilot) DARIAH: federated cloud storage for high availability of data exploitation EISCAT_3D: archiving and processing of data (joint EGI/EUDAT pilot) ELIXIR: enable a federated data analysis infrastructure EPOS: AAI, IaaS/PaaS/SaaS federated cloud services for data exploitation Structural biology/INSTRUCT: computation services for big data LifeWatch: Processing tools for biodiversity data, depositing of citizen scientist data, on demand virtual laboratories in the federated cloud 11 www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323
Activities 5/6 Expand the computing capabilities by federating the access to the distributed accelerated computing co-processors available in the EGI Resource Centres Middleware integration activity and application porting in collaboration with user communities 12 www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323
Activities 6/6 Data Make data already available in the EGI open and facilitate access to open data for discovery, dissemination and exploitation in the EGI Federated Cloud Develop business relationships with industry and SMEs and provide an innovation space where general purpose compute and data services can be offered to develop big data technologies, applications and foster reuse of research data 13 www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323
