  4. Language Arts I will be implementing Common Core State Standards for First Grade. Please access all Common Core standards on the Chino Valley Unified website. Language Arts skills will be integrated into all subject areas. Foundational skills (phonics, grammar) will be explicitly taught daily. Students will read and be exposed to a large variety of text and trade book literature, as well as nonfiction text. Students will be taught to write to a specific purpose. ( Opinion, informative/explanatory, and narrative pieces) Students will practice and be expected to speak in complete sentences using proper and/or academic vocabulary that has been taught. 5

  5. Math We will be implementing Common Core Math Standards utilizing enVisionMath series. Please refer to Math Standards in your outline OR on the District Website. Math Facts memorization will become a part of daily procedures in about 2 weeks. Students will be tested about 4 days a week and will be expected to achieve fluency in adding and subtracting within 20 by the end of the school year. 6

  6. AR AR is a school-wide reading incentive program that encourages students to read books at their reading level and pass comprehension tests online at school. STAR test is administered at school and ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development) is determined. Students should be reading books in their ZPD level. Students can choose books from class or school library. MANY books that you have at home may be AR books. Students must know correct title or quiz number to take an AR quiz at school. Students will work to meet their set reading goal by the end of each trimester. Each picture book is worth 1 2 or 0.5 of a point. Beginning chapter books are usually worth 1 point. The goal for each child will be set by their score on the STAR test and by discussion between the teacher and the child. 7

  7. Snacks, Lunch, and Birthdays Snacks and Lunch Students may bring a healthy snack out to first recess. Please make sure your child knows the difference between their snack and lunch so they don t eat their lunch during snack time. Please make sure your child knows if they are buying lunch or bringing lunch each morning. Please make lunch purchases online to reduce loss and confusion. Students may bring water bottle into class. No flavor mix-ins and no holes punched into the cap. Birthdays Students may bring in a goody bag or snack to be passed out at the end of the day. Stickers, pencils, erasers and small toys work well. Please do not send in any product containing peanuts due to students with peanut allergies in our classroom. 8

  8. Classroom Management We utilize a number coded (1-7) behavior clip chart. Students record behavior number daily on a calendar and initialed by parent every night. Students always begin their day at #4. 1:being a Role Model 2:being Kind 3:being Good 4:did my Best 5:can be Better 6:can Improve 7:can we Talk about behavior Positive Rewards Raffle tickets awarded daily. Student receives one ticket for every day he or she has their behavior calendar initialed. Each level above #4 earns one additional ticket. Raffle tickets can also be earned for correct answers, homework completion, and other positive behaviors and attitudes. Raffle tickets can be redeemed for class prizes. Verbal praise and small incentives are also used when students are caught being good . Classroom marbles are another way we acknowledge positive behavior. Prizes are awarded monthly or as the seating arrangement changes. 9

  9. Homework Students will be given Homework pages to be placed in the yellow homework folder every Monday. They are to complete and return all their homework by Friday. Friday mornings, homework will be checked for completeness. The purpose of homework is to set good and consistent study habits and to practice academic skills. Students are expected to do 20 minutes of homework and 20 minutes of reading each night. 10

  10. Scholastic Book Club Monthly book orders will be sent home in the Homework Folders. All Book Clubs can be accessed online at Scholastic.com. Please place your order and pay online. If not possible, send in paper order and payment. Make checks payable to Scholastic. Place orders online using our class code VY6KJ and help our class earn free books for our class library. 11
