In this science class, students engage in activities like creating brace maps to visualize compounds, identifying elements represented by one or two letters in the periodic table, and completing homework on various substances. The learning targets focus on elements as pure substances with chemical symbols. Brace maps help students understand the composition of compounds, such as water and sodium bicarbonate. Examples and explanations clarify concepts, such as element representation, atom count, and subscripts in compound formulas. The interactive class encourages student engagement and learning in chemistry.

  1. Welcome to Science Class! Warm-Up Be sure to copy learning target and homework into agenda. Before the Bell We will be discussing the NOTES you wrote for homework about elements and compounds!

  2. Today, we will be creating brace maps On a blank sheet of paper, use the following compounds to create a brace map. EXAMPLE Substance Compound Element # of Atoms 2 Hydrogen Water H2O 1 Oxygen

  3. Today, we will be creating brace maps On a blank sheet of paper, use the following compounds to create a brace map. EXAMPLE Substance Compound Element # of Atoms 2 Hydrogen Water H2O 1 Oxygen

  4. PAUSE! READ THIS! Elements are pure substances that are represented by chemical symbols. Some elements are represented by one letter Can you find elements in your periodic table that are represented by one letter? Others are represented by two letters. Can you find elements in your periodic table that are represented by TWO letters?

  5. BE CAREFUL! Sometimes one element can have two letters, so don t get confused! Hint: each element will have at least one capital letter

  6. HOMEWORK! Substance Compound Element # of Atoms Hydrogen 2 Water H2O Oxygen 1 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. C6H12O6:sugar CaCl2: calcium chloride NaHCO3: sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) CO2: carbon dioxide Mg(OH)2: magnesium hydroxide (milk of magnesia) 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. FeS2: pyrite (fool s gold) C2H5OH: ethyl alcohol HCl: hydrochloric acid KMnO4: potassium permanganate NH3: ammonia

  7. EXAMPLES MORE Substance Compound Element # of Atoms Sodium 1 Sodium Hydrogen 1 Bicarbonate NaHCO3 Carbon 1 Oxygen 3

  8. MOREEXAMPLES Substance Compound Element # of Atoms Magnesium 1 Magnesium Oxygen 2 HydroxideMg(OH)2 Hydrogen 2 When there is a parenthesis like this (OH)2, then the subscript changes the elements inside the parentheses. That is why there are 2 atoms of Oxygen AND 2 atoms of Hydrogen
