Palm Sunday This is the start of Holy Week Jesus is welcomed by a large crowd Five days later he was dead Today: most profound summary of the Gospel
1. Mindset Think in yourselves, what was also in Jesus Double entendre Have this attitude in your own mind Have this attitude as a community There is another opposite mindset: Selfish ambition & vanity
1. Mindset Translators add: not only also It completely misses the point: Don t look after yourselves, look after others! Those who don t understand the gospel: these words are unexpected Jesus life exemplifies this mindset - meekness
2. Meekness Not a common word today humbly patient, quiet, submissive, compliant, Jesus was meek St Paul explains by telling us what he did
2. Meekness Though he was God took on the form of a servant He did not count God-ness a thing to be grasped He emptied himself servant He became obedient to death He sacrificed himself for our sakes
3. Majesty God the Father raised him, exalted him (v 9) Jesus name will be above every name Two titles of the emperor Lord & Saviour To call someone else Lord & Saviour was sedition Call Jesus Lord & Saviour cut across everything But everyone will bow to one name - Jesus
Living It We re encouraged to have this mindset: Put others above ourselves This was Jesus mindset How do we be like Jesus in this way? We re not just like him in his death but also in his resurrection!
