Grade level o Pre K Student Scenario #2 Positive responses may include: Actual phone number (or a good attempt), follow up with teacher Who lives at home with you? What is their full name (or phone number)? Parent/guardian name, to include last name Mommy or Daddy with last name o Pre K Student Scenario #3 Positive responses may include: Pointing to or telling about correct door What do you do, if you hear the fire alarm? Talks about fire drill procedure, i.e. we go out with our teacher to the ball field

  5. o Pre K Student Scenario #4 Positive responses may include: Call 911 What do you do if there is a fire? Tell a teacher/adult o Pre K Classroom Teacher Scenario #1 What do you do when a parent tells you a vicious dog has been seen near the playground? Positive responses may include: Notify the office Clear the playground, get all students inside Avoid encounters with the dog o Pre K Classroom Teacher Scenario #2 Positive responses may include: Correctly identifies primary location What is your primary/ secondary evacuation location? Correctly identifies secondary location Expresses desire to learn more about these locations

  6. o Pre K Classroom Teacher Scenario #3 Positive responses may include: Notify others in immediate area An unknown man just shot the front door open, what actions will you take? Gather as many children as possible, move to room with locking door, lock door, turn off lights, hide children from sight, keep children calm and entertained, wait for all clear from law enforcement Go into lockdown as prescribed in school policy & call 911 o Pre K Classroom Teacher Scenario #4 Positive responses may include: Consult with an administrator, follow school protocol A student informs you that their uncle touched the student s private parts. What do you do? As a mandatory reporter you must ensure that a report is forwarded to your local Department of Human Services and/or law enforcement agency, even if you have reported to your principal Notify victims parents (note: there are no privileged conversations in schools) o Pre K Staff/Admin Scenario #1 Positive responses may include: Be sure their child is safe Separated parents, in the middle of a custody battle, are fighting in the parking lot. What do you do? Keep calm and don t engage parties Place school in a lockout status, lock all exterior doors, keep children away from windows while maintaining normal operations Notify police, lift lockout when cleared by law enforcement

  7. o Pre K Staff/Admin Scenario #2 Positive responses may include: Consult with an administrator, follow school protocol A student reports his classroom teacher is, mean and hit me on the back. What do you do? As a mandatory reporter you must ensure that a report is forwarded to your local Department of Human Services and/or law enforcement agency, even if you have not reported to your principal Notify victims parents (note: there are no privileged conversations in schools) o Pre K Staff/Admin Scenario #3 Positive responses may include: Alert staff of anticipated extended hours & shelter-in-place Craft/send message to parents advising them of extended hours Plan for overnight staffing, organize materials needed for overnight stay, i.e. water, food, bedding, entertainment Reassure children that they are in a safe place and their parents will arrive in a timely manner Establish plan for pickup of children at all hours A mid-day ice storm has left roads impassable. Many parents can t get through and its closing time. What actions need to happen? o Pre K Staff/Admin Scenario #4 Positive responses may include: Immediately approach adult and question their presence in your school Escort adult out of the school to continue any conversation other than their verifiable reason for being inside the school Educate on school policy concerning entry If they are resistant, call law enforcement An unknown adult just walked in the front doors (piggybacking off a parent leaving) and has entered the infant classroom. What do you do?

And/or, where can you find this information? (If not known have this conversation now) Provide information on school website, phone number or media outlets where this site will be identified during an incident o Pre K Parent/Volunteer Scenario #2 Positive responses may include: Actual identification of classrooms with infants, smallest children, students with special needs, classes being supervised by new or substitute teachers Which classroom needs your help the most in the event of smoke in the building? o Pre K Parent/Volunteer Scenario #3 Positive responses may include: Current Identification system, i.e. badges, name tags How can you identify a staff member or authorized visitor to this school? ( I know all the parents and teachers. This may not be the best answer based on size and scope of school)

  9. o Pre K Parent/Volunteer Scenario #4 Positive responses may include: Actual identification of locations, based on knowledge of facility Where are safety related equipment (fire extinguishers, fire alarms, exam gloves & AED s) located in this building? Or a desire to be educated on location of listed items o K-5 Student Scenario #1 Positive responses may include: Tell the teacher What do you do if you see a stranger on the playground? Tell a trusted adult Yell, Stranger! o K-5 Student Scenario #2 Positive responses may include: Back to classroom Where do you go if you hear a fire alarm while you are walking to the bathroom? Evacuation site, if known School Office

  10. o K-5 Student Scenario #3 Positive responses may include: Tell any adult in the immediate area What do you do if you smell gas or smoke? Pull fire alarm if available and/or able Tell office if no other adults are nearby Return to classroom if safe o K-5 Student Scenario #4 Positive responses may include: Tell the recess monitor, in a calm manner What do you do if a bigger kid calls you names on the playground every day? Tell a trusted adult at the school, in a calm manner Tell your parents Tell him or her to stop o K-5 Classroom Teacher Scenario #1 Positive responses may include: References to current school policy What is the school s policy on bullying? Or a discussion on what the school is doing in this area What are the school s rules on bullying?

  11. o K-5 Classroom Teacher Scenario #2 Positive responses may include: Notify another adult to call the office, or use inter-school communication One of your students, who is allergic to peanuts, appears to be having trouble breathing after being served a cookie during a classroom party. What do you do? Send a child runner to the office or call 911 if no other adult is available Conduct first aid, be aware of the presence of epi pens o K-5 Classroom Teacher Scenario #3 Positive responses may include: Speak to the 11 yr. old about his situation, (may be easier for a favored teacher or male teacher), being aware of health or mental issues. Notify admin if necessary Speak to 11 yr. old s parents about situation Refer to mental health if necessary, (counselor or outside agency) Other children should be talked to in general terms about mistakes, PBIS or classroom rules if being utilized in school An 11 yr. old boy is being teased for wetting his bed. How do you support the student? What should happen to the other children? o K-5 Classroom Teacher Scenario #4 Positive responses may include: Lock the door, gather children into secure room/area, turn off lights, hide children from sight, keep children quiet and calm, wait for all clear from law enforcement Demonstrate the actions you would take after hearing, Lockdown, lockdown, lockdown, over the schools PA system. Go into lockdown as prescribed in school policy

  12. o K-5 Staff/Admin Scenario #1 Positive responses may include: Call 911 or have another adult call Provide first aid Have other adults remove child witnesses Once EMS has taken over, notify parents of injured child as well as witnesses Notify entire school in appropriate manner Provide mental health counseling A 7 yr. old is struck by a car at dismissal, he is seriously injured and several other children witness the accident. What actions should be taken? o K-5 Staff/Admin Scenario #2 Positive responses may include: Notify school community in appropriate manner A favorite art teacher dies over the Christmas holiday from complications of pneumonia. What actions need to happen? Follow procedures of school crisis team, including mental health counseling Think about appropriate memorial activities o K-5 Staff/Admin Scenario #3 Positive responses may include: Use alert system to place school in shelter-in-place condition Reverse evacuation of all persons outside If possible move people away from any exterior windows and/or into storm shelters Double check personnel are in appropriate areas, without endangering yourself A tornado alert has just been issued for the surrounding community. A teacher reports seeing a funnel cloud as she returns from a meeting. What actions are necessary?

  13. o K-5 Staff/Admin Scenario #4 Positive responses may include: After the girls are separated have a conference with both girls and at least 1 other trusted adult Two 5thgrade girls get in a physical fight on the playground, one calls the other a, fattie. What steps can you take? Parents may need to be involved, at a minimum notified Use Restorative Justice practices if applicable o K-5 Parent/Volunteer Scenario #1 Positive responses may include: Approach him and question his presence You notice a man, whom you don t know piggyback thru the side doors with students returning from recess, he does not have a visitors pass. What do you do? Inform him of the proper entrance process Notify a staff member or law enforcement, if he does not comply o K-5 Parent/Volunteer Scenario #2 Positive responses may include: Follow schools reverse evacuation plan if known The town tornado warning siren just went off, you are helping supervise recess. What steps do you take? Calmly escort students back inside the school Inform a staff member so they are aware of the siren Move to storm shelter or safe area, as directed by staff

  14. o K-5 Parent/Volunteer Scenario #3 Positive responses may include: Enter bathroom and confront stranger on reason and identification During a field trip you see a 3rdgrader walk into a bathroom with an adult male, whom you don t know. What do you do? Notify school staff member and law enforcement if necessary o K-5 Parent/Volunteer Scenario #4 Positive responses may include: By their photo identification, that they are supposed to be wearing How can you identify a staff member or authorized visitor to this school? Other responses may include: School Uniform or Clothing, prior knowledge to include name and position ( I know all the parents and teachers. This may not be the best answer based on size and scope of school) o 6-8 Student Scenario #1 Positive responses may include: Notify the nearest trusted adult, i.e. police officer, tour guide, security guard, venue staff What should you do if you become separated from your class while on a field trip? Use cell phone to notify school or parent Wait by the entrance/exit you used if known

  15. o 6-8 Student Scenario #2 Positive responses may include: Find nearest room with an adult and notify them What should you do if you see a man in the hallway, shouting at the office staff? Return to classroom and notify teacher o 6-8 Student Scenario #3 Positive responses may include: Notify the teacher, call the front office, send someone else to tell an adult A student in gym class starts shaking after bumping his head on the wall. The teacher has just stepped outside to speak with another student. What should you do? Place victim on the floor, and ensure he doesn t hit his head o 6-8 Student Scenario #4 One of your classmates in English class, showed you her Facebook page. It is filled with bad language and threats to finish the English teacher. What steps should you take? Positive responses may include: Notify a trusted adult about the page, i.e. a teacher, SRO, principal, a parent or Safe2Tell (Counsel student about this type of behavior not being accepted in your school and it s not snitching if it saves a life)

  16. o 6-8 Classroom Teacher Scenario #1 Positive responses may include: Enter the nearest room that can be locked from the inside taking any others nearby with me, lock the door, turn off the lights, use radio or panic alarm system to initiate a lockdown, hide out of sight, remain silent, keep others calm and wait for law enforcement to end lockdown What would you do if you noticed a person walking down the hallway with a rifle in his/her hands? o 6-8 Classroom Teacher Scenario #2 A student has just submitted a short essay, in response to a Historical Figures assignment. The essay covers school shooters and how much fun they must have had. What do you do? Positive responses may include: Report incident to counselor or administrator in person, ASAP And/or initiate Threat Assessment Team and conduct assessment Maintain contact with student, if threat is imminent, until higher authority takes on responsibility o 6-8 Classroom Teacher Scenario #3 Positive responses may include: Consult with an administrator, follow school protocol A female student reports her high school brothers friend has been rubbing her leg during the drive to school. What actions will you take? As a mandatory reporter you must ensure that a report is forwarded to your local Department of Human Services and/or law enforcement agency, even if you have reported to your principal Notify victim s parents (note: there are no privileged conversations in schools)

  17. o 6-8 Classroom Teacher Scenario #4 Positive responses may include: Know and use secondary evacuation routes An evacuation has just been ordered due to an electrical fire in the labs. Your normal evacuation route is blocked by smoke and heat. What do you do with your students? Use other avenues for evacuation, i.e. break out windows Last resort, return to classroom, seal door and call 911 or use radio to notify administrator of situation o 6-8 Staff/Admin Scenario #1 Positive responses may include: Depending on school s location, order/alert best response action, Shelter-in-place or Evacuation with additional information, i.e. head to the 2ndfloor or evacuate to nearest high ground The county Sheriff s office just alerted you to a flash flood headed towards your school. What actions do you take next? Implement Emergency Operations Plan, for flooding (a good time to review these) o 6-8 Staff/Admin Scenario #2 Positive responses may include: Notify the Principal, give as much info as possible A suspended 7thgrader shows up at the office, wanting to talk to the principal, but does not seem comfortable entering the school. What actions should you take? Notify school security, SRO or local law enforcement Do not approach by yourself

  18. o 6-8 Staff/Admin Scenario #3 Positive responses may include: Talk to the 6thgrader about how this made him feel and some measures he can take to stop the bullying Speak to the 8thgrader about appropriate language and the hurt he may have inflicted on the 6thgrader Report both students to the counselor Report the 8thgrader for disciplinary action if necessary A smaller 6thgrader shows you messages on his phone from an 8thgrade football player. The messages call the 6thgrader, a wuss, a weakling, and gay. What do you do? o 6-8 Staff/Admin Scenario #4 Positive responses may include: Reassure the teacher that while this may seem inappropriate, it is allowed in the school, but will be followed up on A teacher reports one of her students came to school with shooting trophies, blank targets and photos of himself deer hunting. What actions should you take? Talk to the student about appropriate messages at school, and how these things may be taken the wrong way Evaluate for recommendation to the Threat Assessment team o 6-8 Parent/Volunteer Scenario #1 Positive responses may include: Report to administration, security staff and/or the SRO A student reports his friend is showing off 2 large knives in his backpack. What can/should you do? Follow up to ensure action has been taken

  19. o 6-8 Parent/Volunteer Scenario #2 Positive responses may include: Current reunification site or alternates Where is this school s parent/student reunification site located? And/or, where can you find this information? If not known, discuss school protocol for this event Ensure your school has a plan for this event and the presence of visitors o 6-8 Parent/Volunteer Scenario #4 Positive responses may include: Look for signage, if not immediately known Where is the nearest AED and fire extinguisher located to your current location? Refer to school layout and maps if necessary Talk about the importance of knowing these locations Or a desire to be educated on location of listed items

  20. o 9-12 Student Scenario #1 Positive responses may include: Tell a trusted adult/staff member What would you do if you saw a fellow student with a gun in their locker? Alert campus security or SRO Call 911 Call Safe2Tell o 9-12 Student Scenario #2 Positive responses may include: Tell a trusted adult or staff member A friend has started talking to unseen entities, telling them to leave him alone & that he can t hurt her. This happens when he thinks he s alone. What do you do? Tell the school psychologist or counselor Tell you parents or you friends parents o 9-12 Student Scenario #3 The whole school starts to shake, lockers and other students fall to the ground, people start yelling, and the overhead sprinklers turn on. What steps should you take? Positive responses may include: Follow your teachers direction to a safe shelter, i.e. a doorway or storm shelter If possible to safely evacuate, do so, move away from the building and go to the evacuation site (Take others with you if possible and safe) Discuss evacuation sites and procedures for alerting school staff

  21. o 9-12 Student Scenario #4 Positive responses may include: Be an upstander, not a bystander, tell the senior that bullying is not accepted in our school You see a senior girl shoving a freshman girl into a wall every day after lunch. The senior always walks away laughing. What can you do? Comfort the freshman, let her know she has friends who won t let this happen Tell a trusted adult or staff member about the behavior o 9-12 Classroom Teacher Scenario #1 Positive responses may include: Talk to the students about how important it is they share what they know for the safety of the entire school An ice bomb was detonated in the senior parking lot during lunch. Several students are overheard talking about who was responsible. What do you do? Connect students with administrator, school security or SRO for further investigation Report what you heard to administrators and the police o 9-12 Classroom Teacher Scenario #2 Positive responses may include: Consult with your administration and or emergency planning team, assess different routes and find a safer route. During a tornado drill, you realize your class must pass beneath several skylights to reach your shelter area. Can this be changed & who can you call to correct this oversight? Ensure changes are made to emergency plans Drill using new route

  22. o 9-12 Classroom Teacher Scenario #3 Positive responses may include: Stay with the student until you have connected them with mental health staff, remind them that you can t keep this kind of secret, especially because you care about them and their safety A freshman talks to you after class about feeling hopeless regarding his grades & life in general. He asks you to keep quiet about this because he trusts you. What can you do? As a mandatory reporter you must inform trained mental health staff, in your school or in the greater community Use empathetic language to let them know you care about them & that they have done the right thing and help is available o 9-12 Classroom Teacher Scenario #4 Positive responses may include: Counsel the student on using appropriate/respectful language A straight A student punches a locker after being corrected for calling a teaching assistant a fag . What steps should you undertake? Talk to the student about anger management, refer to mental health staff if you are unsure Refer to Mental Health staff o 9-12 Staff/Admin Scenario #1 Positive responses may include: Refer the information to your Threat Assessment team or administrator and follow-up to ensure the matter has been addressed You review a student s web history as part of your duties and find sites on bomb making, rifles, and ammunition sales. What actions do you take next? Save copies of the web history for use by the Threat Assessment team

  23. o 9-12 Staff/Admin Scenario #2 Positive responses may include: Activate fire alarm system Smoke is coming from a chemistry lab, what do you do? Evacuate all occupants and yourself in safest manner possible Notify front office and call 911 Move to evacuation site o 9-12 Staff/Admin Scenario #3 Positive responses may include: Call the school crisis team to discuss appropriate school response A student at the neighboring high school is killed in a traffic accident. One of your students was the driver and suffered only scratches. How can you support this child? Use empathetic language to let child know it s okay to grieve Refer child to mental health staff o 9-12 Staff/Admin Scenario #4 The school custodian shows you a discarded notebook with drawings of the school and threats against the dean, dated two days from now. A quick check reveals no one student in particular. What do you do? Positive responses may include: Notify the dean of the threat Notify the Threat Assessment team and follow-up to ensure threat is addressed Involve law enforcement

  24. o 9-12 Parent/Volunteer Scenario #1 Positive responses may include: If known, discuss actions, i.e. moving to shelter location, showing ID to staff, sheltering with students Where is the shelter-in-place location in the event of a tornado? If not known, discuss school protocol for this event Ensure your school has a plan for this event o 9-12 Parent/Volunteer Scenario #2 Positive responses may include: Notify school administrator or mental health staff Your daughter shares concerns about her friend who has been posting pictures to Instagram of her arms covered in blood? What should you do? Call the friends parents if you have a relationship Notify Safe2Tell o 9-12 Parent/Volunteer Scenario #3 Positive responses may include: School goes into lockdown or lockout status, law enforcement is notified What actions will the school take in the event of a stranger with a gun being observed in the parking lot? Discuss visitor s actions within these emergency actions

  25. o 9-12 Parent/Volunteer Scenario #4 Positive responses may include: Current Identification system, i.e. badges, name tags How do you recognize other trusted adults in this school? Identification needs to be worn in a visible manner I know all the parents and teachers. This may not be the best answer based on size and scope of school o IHE Student Scenario #1 Positive responses may include: Contact campus safety or Emergency Medical Services The school is shut down during a snowstorm. You have no way to get to the nearest pharmacy to refill your asthma medications. Who can you call? Contact resident advisor Call 911 o IHE Student Scenario #2 Positive responses may include: Into the nearest building possible You are out on the quad when a campus security officer runs by with his gun drawn, yelling, Get inside right now. Where do you go and/or do? Alert occupants of building to situation and take emergency actions based on school policy at the direction of school staff Lock yourself into the nearest classroom

  26. o IHE Student Scenario #3 Positive responses may include: Tell a trusted adult/staff member A friend tells you she overheard a classmate talking on his phone about, Taking this place down. She swears you to secrecy, but you don t feel right. What can you do? Use anonymous reporting system, i.e. Text-a-Tip or Safe-2-Tell Notify campus security or police o IHE Student Scenario #4 Positive responses may include: Tell a trusted adult/staff member At a party over the weekend you watch a freshman being initiated into his fraternity. It looked violent. What actions should you take? Use anonymous reporting system, i.e. Text-a-Tip or Safe2Tell Notify campus security or police o IHE Classroom Faculty Scenario #1 Positive responses may include: At a minimum, lock and/or barricade doors, turn off lights, and hide if possible You receive a text alert from the school telling you to lockdown your lecture hall, which is filled with 56 students. What steps do you take to accomplish this? Responses based on current school policy

  27. o IHE Classroom Faculty Scenario #2 Flood waters are rising around your lab room. Students report water coming in the back door. The school has given you no guidance as to proceed. What should you do? Positive responses may include: Notify others in area of danger, evacuate if it is safe to do so Evacuate students to higher ground if possible, at a minimum move to higher floor Call 911 or campus security staff o IHE Classroom Faculty Scenario #3 You observe a student s computer screen, filled with images of a new faculty member in her lingerie. When confronted the student tells you, Everyone knows. What steps should you take? Explain to the students the need to respect the player s privacy Arrange for students to speak with an administrator about this issue

  28. o IHE Staff/Admin Scenario #1 Three upperclassmen were just arrested for dealing marijuana. The student council is angry about the arrests, blaming the school for not protecting the students rights. How do you handle this situation? Positive responses may include: Arrange a meeting with the student council Talk about current state laws and school policy regarding marijuana use, as well as the damage done to the school community Involve the SRO or law enforcement if you feel it will be helpful o IHE Staff/Admin Scenario #2 The local police have just notified you about 2 men seen walking towards campus, possibly armed with rifles. The dean reported that they are ROTC students, training. What else needs to happen? Positive responses may include: The school needs to go into lockdown until the two men can be identified by police and questioned If the men are students they should be talked to about appropriate behavior and the need to notify school staff of their activities o IHE Staff/Admin Scenario #3 Positive responses may include: Consider evacuating to a secondary location before the storm arrives The building normally used to shelter in place during a storm is being renovated. Tornados are predicted for this afternoon. What steps should you take? Consider sending students home early as long as this can be accomplished safely Evaluate other shelter locations within the building

  29. o IHE Staff/Admin Scenario #4 The physics professor reports, feeling scared, by a junior college transfer who has just been given a failing grade in physics. The student is relatively unknown on campus. What do you do? Positive responses may include: Notify the Threat Assessment team for further evaluation and follow up Provide the professor with a police escort to his car Speak to the student about how he was impacted by the grade o IHE Parent/Visitor Scenario #1 Positive responses may include: Notify the nearest police officer or security guard During a basketball game, opposing students begin yelling at each other. You witness one raise his shirt to show a handgun tucked in his waistband. What can you do? Notify the nearest school staff member Call 911 o IHE Parent/Visitor Scenario #2 Positive responses may include: Notify school administration or campus security What actions can you take, if you hear about a sit-in, to be held later on, protesting the schools LGBTQ policy? Notify school staff

  30. o IHE Parent/Visitor Scenario #3 Positive responses may include: Don t keep this a secret for the student s safety, as well as the entire school Your student calls home, asking for your help with his/her friend who is in a bad place, but wants you to keep this secret. What actions can you take? Notify campus administration, campus security and/or mental health staff Call Safe2Tell or 911 o IHE Parent/Visitor Scenario #4 Positive responses may include: Stay away from the area, you may cause confusion or become part of the incident Arriving on campus you hear multiple sirens and see police vehicles heading to the freshman dorms, where your child lives. What can you do? Text your student to find out what is going on Remain cautious, access the school s emergency notification system for updates o K-12 Bus Driver Scenario #1 Positive responses may include: Remain calm, bring the bus safely to a halt in a visible area A student seated in the back row, stands up and brandishes a pistol, stating, Stop the bus! What do you do? Listen to what the student says and use calming language to determine the students intentions Attempt to convince the student to let other children safely off the bus Use radio to alert dispatch if safe to do so (consider alarm codes)

  31. o K-12 Bus Driver Scenario #2 Positive responses may include: Keep the door closed An angry father bangs on your bus door and wants to board your bus to confront a bully. What do you do? Ask the father to step away from the bus Use radio to alert dispatch and police if necessary Report incident to supervisor when safe to do so o K-12 Bus Driver Scenario #3 Positive responses may include: Bring the bus to safe stop in a visible area An 8 yr. old three rows back tells you his seatmate is having a bad asthma attack. What do you do? Notify dispatch of problem and/or call 911 Move other children away from child and perform first aid if trained to do so o K-12 Bus Driver Scenario #4 Positive responses may include: Notify dispatch of your problem, ask them for an interpreter or a message you can relay to child i.e. Google translator After a minor traffic accident disables your bus, an ESL student seems confused about how to contact her parents. What actions do you take? Find a method of communication that works, i.e. another child, a passerby, writing, use visual signs to assist
