Emergencies overview Humanitarian emergency describes event(s) that presents a critical threat to the healthy, safety, security (financial and non-financial) or well being of people to cope on their own. Such crises can either be natural disasters, man-made disasters or complex emergencies attributed to; Political/social unrest. Environmental causes Healthcare emergencies Population displacement Hunger and malnutrition Lack of basic services SOUTH AFRICAN RED CROSS SOCIETY 2021

  3. Emergency management Emergency management encompasses 5 key steps; Prevention Mitigation Preparedness Response Recovery SOUTH AFRICAN RED CROSS SOCIETY 2021

  4. Emergency support plan Different emergencies of any nature and scale requires prior emergency planning in order to minimize vulnerabilities of people involved. The following steps are key; Assess needs Create guidelines or written policy Plan levels of response Train personnel (Basic disaster management; First Aid; Safer access..)   5. Emergency services Emergency services are public organisations or sectors whose duty is to take quick action to deal with emergencies when they occur. These include; Ambulance Fire Police Army SOUTH AFRICAN RED CROSS SOCIETY 2021

Support services Support services encompass those activities provided to or on behalf of a person in the areas of personal care, assistance and property maintenance in least restrictive environment. They might include; Referrals Transportation Care and support Evacuation Educational SOUTH AFRICAN RED CROSS SOCIETY 2021

  7. Disparities in emergencies Emergencies and hazards do not affect people of the same society/institution in the same way. This generally depend on the context that relate to socio-economic order, culture and religion of a given society. These factors exist as sources of disparity in vulnerabilities among people living within the same society. Gender is a central organising principle of gendered vulnerabilities, risks and capacities during emergencies SOUTH AFRICAN RED CROSS SOCIETY 2021

  8. Humanitarian relief Emergency assessments are key in order to provide relevant humanitarian relief Assessments involves not only determining what the situation is, but also why it is that way and what opportunities and risks might affect efforts to change the situation. The following should be determined by assessment; Needs Technical support required Resources (material and financial) Humanitarian actors, financial institutions and donors get more insight from assessments on interventions or relief support to focus on.
