To educate the public -- but a far greater role To ensure transparent and greater and better democratic governance Where rulers are held to their own words and facts Against a matrix that is rigorous and measurable More and more media professionals are using these tools Provides the tools I call Triple 4

Triple 4 Educating: the public, the stakeholder and enabling them to better use their own data Empowering: media, researchers, CSOs but also the public Extracting: providing/mining information from areas where govts and organizations didn t earlier even look and put out for public knowledge Engineering: RTI can help develop a real map of what s happening in the country

  4. Saving Lives: Hidden Figures Save lives; at minimum -- it can improve governance Every day, an estimated 180 children go missing in India. That s 65,700 per year The number of untraced children nearly doubled between 2013 and 2015, from about 34,000 to nearly 63,000 Delhi Police say 22 children go missing here every day Used for organized crimes, organ harvesting, illegal child labour and trafficking

Often media sees this as too slow, not worth investment of time and money; this is a a real challenge to all of us but esp CIC and SICs Yet, experiences of Indian Express, Business Standard, Amar Ujala and others with more and more RTI units show that light of information, robustly examined and explained, with clear focus and analysis, can inform, shock, shake tool for changes in public perceptions but also for good governance
