  27. What has happened to the Sunday School or GroupLife?

  28. Scenario: You want me in Sunday School, tell me about it.

  29. Depending on time, 30 to 40 responses. Each response is related to WHAT might be done in Sunday School class or Group Time. Though Reaching and Witnessing were among the original tasks of Sunday School, often they do not make the list unless prompted: what about outreach? Eventually, I ask: Of these things, what will I actually experience if I come to your group? Their response (in order): Fellowship, Prayer, and Teaching the Lesson. Let s look at the Big three before returning to the original question.

  30. Fellowship When does it start? As people arrive (late). How long does it last? (not set, but 15 minutes). What happens? People talk to their friends, get snacks, and THEIR seat.

  31. Prayer When does it start? After Fellowship. How long does it last? (not set, but 15 minutes). What happens? Prayer requests and prayer.

  32. Teach the Lesson When does it start? After Prayer. How long does it last? (not set, but whatever time is left, usually less that 30 minutes). What happens? Read/Lecture and (maybe) ask scripted questions for discussion.

  33. My Response: Fellowship Current Reality? Not true Fellowship. No expectation of guests. It is a delay tactic, waiting for people to show up. What should happen? Begin 15 minutes before class so guests can meet members in casual environment. Everyone participating, possibly use ice breakers.

  34. My Response: Prayer Current Reality? Embarrassing requests, low or no ministry. Majority of time spent on prayer requests with little prayer. What should happen? Gather requests on cards as people enter or during the week. Assign ministry action/follow-up as appropriate. No more than 10-15 minutes, leaving 30 plus minutes for teaching.

  35. My Response: Teach the Lesson Current Reality? Read/lecture the content because of limited time. Never been a task of Sunday School. (Teach People the Bible) Wrong tone, target, and test. What should happen? Transformational teaching: truth to life action. Three C s: Community, Content, Christlikeness (Character, Competencies). Engage more people: Peter, James, and John principle. What did it mean: Then? Today? Tomorrow and Beyond? (Revelation, Relevance, Response).

  36. What has happened to the Sunday School or GroupLife?

  37. We have lost our WHY. Great Commandment: Love God, Love Others Great Commission: Disciples disciple (salvation, obedience) Great Call: As teachers: Encourage & Equip (Eph. 4) Know your Why: Michael Jr. Your WHAT has more impact Michael Hyatt You ll know your WAY Victor Frankl you can endure any HOW Why What Way How What has happened?
