  1. Decisions on what topics? Curriculum Certification Funding Professional Development Teacher Pay School Safety Health & Wellness Issues Student Transfers and much, much more! Education is on the ballot. Elected officials make decisions on a regular basis that affect you, your school and your students.

  2. How does legislation affect students, teachers and the classroom? The state s governor signs the bill. Oklahoma State Capitol House of Representatives & Senate approve bills. The law often requires the State Board of Education, which includes the state superintendent, to approve administrative rules about how to implement its content. The law also often requires local school boards to approve a policy related to the implementation of its content. The law, rules and policy must be implemented by school staff.

  3. Register to vote, if you have not already. Vote in every election. Get to know your elected officials. Research candidates and issues. Contact your elected officials with concerns and suggestions about legislative issues or as a resource on education issues. How can educators make a difference? Educators are trusted members of their community, and your influence can shape public policy! Share your thoughts about candidates and school-related legislation with your friends, family and neighbors.

  4. Public employees including educators must use personal time and personal resources when advocating for a candidate, for or against legislation/policy or for or against a ballot measure. When it comes to advocacy, what limits do I have as an educator? When it comes to bond issues or education issues, only information should be provided when you are representing the school district. You can explain how it will impact you and your students. Students should never feel pressured or persuaded by a member of the staff about any political or voting-related topic. Keep the classroom for learning only.
