Education for women in Malawi Majority of the population 84% of the total population (2017) reside in rural areas - Disparity in literacy levels in Malawi 69.75% for males, 55.2% for females (MDHS 2015) Reasons for disparity in education levels between boys and girls Given that the majority of the population in Malawi resides in rural areas where there is rampant poverty, most parents prefer to invest/educate the male child as opposed to the girl child with the latter being forced to attend to household chores or sent into marriage in exchange for dowry (lobola).
Education for women in Malawi Whilst education is a constitutional right for everyone in Malawi regardless of their gender, it is an established fact that by educating a girl child, you educate a nation.
