Most LGBTQIA+ community members in South Africa, particularly in Orange Farm, face discrimination and violence. Understanding the lack of knowledge and acceptance, a door-to-door campaign was initiated in 2023 to educate and connect people, distribute condoms, host community picnics, and promote safe sex practices. Partnering with organizations like Khoroni Men's Forum, the project aims to create a safer and more inclusive environment for the LGBTQIA+ population.

  2. Summary In this project we go door to door educating people about sexuality and mostly how to support and understand LGBTQIA+ community members, we first go to homes of LGBTQIA+ members to educate their siblings on how they can support and protect LGBTQIA+ community members around their area. We also go around the community, visiting pubs and tarvens to educate people about LGBTQIA+. We host community picnics to try and reduce the stigma and discrimination around LGBTQIA+ community. Distribution of condoms and lubes to LGBTQIA+ community members and motivate them to practice safe sex. Add photo or video Voice and Choice Learning and Sharing Summit 2023

  3. Background? Give some background - What was the situation before the intervention Most of the LGBTQIA community members still live in fear of discrimination and being killed in a democratic South Africa after 29 years of freedom where everyone has equal rights, in the South of Johannesburg there is a community called Orange Farm where LGBTQIA+ community members are still being killed and discriminated because of their sexual orientation. One thing we noticed above everything is that a lot of people still lack knowledge and information about sexuality and how to accept each other. So in early 2023 we started a door to door campaign which consisted of volunteers across the community, Men s Organisation and GBV survivors support organisations. 7. Challenges We still have people in the community who do not want to learn about LGBTQIA+ community, they put their beliefs ,religion and culture/tribe as an excuse to discriminate There is a certain group of people that believe that if you commit crime and sleep/have sex with a gay/lesbian your bad luck will go away so that creates a high number of rape cases of LGBTQIA+ community members within our community. 8. Strategies to overcome challenges Through partnerships with other organisations we managed able to educate people within the community about sexuality and this we do via door to door campaigns, visiting Men s forums and we are still looking forward to get an opportunity to speak and educate people via radio and social media platforms like Tik Tok and You Tube. 11. Sustainability/next steps One of the biggest drivers in this project is having more volunteers and partners that are willing to work through all the circumstances and challenges, this helps a lot with referrals.
