Who is NAMI? Who is NAMI? NAMI is the nation s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental health conditions What started as two mothers gathered around a kitchen table in 1979 has blossomed into the nation s leading voice on mental health. Today, NAMI is an alliance of more than 600 local Affiliates and 49 State Organizations who work in your community to raise awareness and provide support and education that was not previouslyavailable to those in need.

NAMIs Mission NAMI provides advocacy, education, support and public awareness so that all individuals and families affected by mental illness can build better lives.
NAMIs Vision NAMI s Vision NAMI envisions a world where all persons affected by mental illness experience resiliency, recovery and wellness.
Central beliefs Mental Illnesses are illnesses like any other Stigma is real and has terrible consequences Both the individual and the family are essential to the recovery process Education and support for families and people with mental illness make substantial differences in outcomes, recovery and resilience With appropriate treatment and services, people can and do recover from mental illness
NAMI Signature Education Programs NAMI Signature Education Programs Provide Evidenced-Based, Peer- led education and support activities for individuals and family members
Support groups The NAMI Support Group model operates differently from other support groups, such as "share-and-care" groups.

Advocacy NAMI advocates on the federal, state, and local levels on behalf of people living with mental health conditions.
Three strategic task forces that work across each of NAMIs departments, providing subject-matter expertise, ensuring collaboration and maximizing impact. The Cross The Cross- -Cultural Innovation & Engagement Task Force, Cultural Innovation & Engagement Task Force, working to implement an equity-focused, culturally responsive and trauma-informed lens across all NAMI programs The Justice Diversion Task Force, The Justice Diversion Task Force, working to decriminalize mental illness and divert people from the justice system The Youth and Young Adult Task Force The Youth and Young Adult Task Force, working to reach more youth and young adults in need, as well as parents, caregivers and educators
