Brock Library Open Access Publishing Fund Established in 2011 as educational opportunity: succeeded Funding from Office of Research added 2020 Provided 128 grants to 104 researchers across 17 academic departments Heaviest use in Faculties of health sciences, sciences; psychology dept.
Closing the door Scholarly Communications Working Group: Closing OA fund set as a 2022-23 working group goal Summer 2022: Report recommending closure: endorsed by Library admin; Vice-President Research Winter-Spring 2023: Spreading the news: Website updates: including OA infrastructure Meeting with stakeholders: research administrators, faculty Communications: Brock News article, email messaging, newsletters Workshop: How to plan for open access without breaking the bank
Opening new windows: OA strategy Tier 1: preferred guides direct investments in open access publications must be fully open access with no end-user fees; may not be hybrid publishers should commit to best practices for scholarly publishing, such as those provided by DOAJ, COPE, and OASPA. non-profit/non-commercial venues are preferred advocacy for open support for transitioning from closed to open publishing
Opening new windows: OA strategy (2) Tier 2: mandatory commonly applies to third-party investments, such as consortial investments via CRKN and OCUL applies to most read-and-publish agreements publishers should commit to best practices for scholarly publishing, such as those provided by DOAJ, COPE, and OASPA. publishers should provide clear instruction and support for Brock authors claiming discounts/no APCs under the terms of publishing agreements
Next steps Proposal for potential new OA investments: Publisher membership(?) OA book support OA Publishing association membership Ramping up promotion of no/low fee routes to OA: Repository (aligns with Brock OA policy) OA journals without APCs Read-and-publish agreements
