Sustainability is one of four key principles outlined in the University Strategic Plan 2020-2026 designed to enable us to act together, using our collective skills and diversity, to deliver a better world through the transformational power of quality education and research STRATEGY Resources: - ESD website - ESD vision Statement - Overview guidance and quick reference tool 2

Sustainability is increasingly important to HEIs and getting the approach right could be central to its continued success. - 91% of students think that their place of study should actively incorporate and promote sustainable development 84% would like to see sustainable development actively incorporated and promoted through all subjects 93% feel it is important for students to graduate with the knowledge and skills required to address sustainability challenges CHALLENGE - - These numbers challenge preconceptions about which subjects hold domain over sustainability. This is important in terms of student choice and motivation for selecting place and subjects of study. 3

WORLD LEADING EMBEDDING UOR: ESD PRINCIPLES Embedding ESD into the subject curriculum; encouraging the application of subject knowledge and practices to develop an explicit understanding of the challenges facing the wider world Becoming a world-leading institution for sustainability learning and teaching, informed by research The curriculum is the only guaranteed point of engagement between students and the HEI. Education for Sustainable Development can be embedded to enhance the student experience ALL SUBJECTS EMPOWERING We have developed 4 key principles in support of the University sustainability strategy. Ensuring that ESD is a focus of all subjects at the University, experienced in a way that is authentic to the discipline Empowering our students with the knowledge, skills and attributes to contribute solutions to global challenges in an equitable and just way 4

  5. GOOD PRACTICE EXAMPLES AIM: FORE-FRONTING ESD. THE EXAMPLES WILL APPEAR ON THE WEBSITE IN ORDER TO CATALOGUE GOOD PRACTICE AND COMMUNICATE TO COLLEAGUES AND STUDENTS THAT ESD IS A FUNDAMENTAL PART OF THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE AUDIENCE: STAFF AND STUDENTS, BOTH EXISTING A PROSPECTIVE. IT MAY NOT ALWAYS BE CLEAR TO STUDENTS THAT THE UNIVERSITY IS EMBEDDING ESD. THE EXAMPLES WILL ACT AS A USEFUL RESOURCE FOR COLLEAGUES DESIGNING LEARNING EXPERIENCES, AND STUDENTS ENGAGED IN THOSE EXPERIENCES TO HIGHLIGHT WHAT IS BEING DONE AND WHERE 5
