
Empowering Underrepresented Students in STEM Education
Iowa State University's IINSPIRE-LSAMP Alliance, supported by NSF, aims to increase diversity in STEM fields by providing opportunities and support for underrepresented minorities. The program focuses on student retention, progression to baccalaureate degrees, and successful transitions to graduate programs. Professional development activities are designed to assist faculty and staff in fulfilling these goals and fostering collaborative approaches.

IINSPIRE Alliance Overview IINSPIRE: Iowa Illinois Nebraska STEM Partnership for Innovation in Research and Education NSF LSAMP Program: Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Alliance among 16 two-year and four-year colleges and universities: To broaden the participation of underrepresented minorities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in the Midwest. To support students, increase their success, and provide them with academic, research, training, and mentoring opportunities. NSF Grant At beginning of second 5-year grant 3
NSF Alliance Goals Increase individual student retention and progression to baccalaureate degrees for underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. Enable successful transfer of underrepresented students from 2- year and 4-year institutions in STEM programs. Increase access to high quality undergraduate research experiences. Facilitate seamless transition of underrepresented students into STEM graduate programs. 4
Goals of Professional Development Activities Encourage and enable faculty and staff to fulfill the goals of the alliance and in particular their individual and campus goals related to the alliance goals. Provide some resource materials for campuses using precedents from within the alliance and beyond Assist faculty and staff from the alliance in working collaboratively to develop approaches and materials to use to further their goals. Facilitate sharing of accomplishments and materials developed in a way that they can inspire and be used by others. 5
Goals for Today Develop a plan for our professional development activities and assist campus representatives in encouraging campus members to participate Using the survey information from earlier and Getting additional responses to the survey Understand what issues are pressing on the campuses that we can address Get feedback on format (virtual series or face to face) prefered for events 6

Outcomes from survey to date Alliance and Campus-wide programming: Onboarding new IINSPIRE faculty participation Understanding program goals and ways to participante Awareness of resources for students Supporting each other to do IINSPIRE work How to respond to current events including Acute events (hate incident on a campus) Broader or longer term issues (DACA, immigration policy) Partnerships with campus offices also responding 8
Outcomes from survey to date Pedagogy and student support programming Using inclusive practices in the classroom, particularly with lower SES students in mind Approaches to addressing uneven math preparation, and math interventions. Supporting students with different levels of college preparation, especially first generation college students. Culturally responsive education and teaching in context of place and culture. 9
What approach works best? Series of virtual events with some interactive components Two face to face meetings where there are breakout groups Something else - maybe facilitation of them getting into small groups on their own 10
