  1. Using technology to enable collaboration and team work in learning and teaching sessions Presentation by Glenn Duckworth, Learning Technologist, FBL 21 June 2016

  2. About this session Provide some basic information on Technology Enhanced Active Learning (TEAL) for collaboration and team work short presentation Take part in a few hands on team tasks Try out some of the technology in the room Discuss your thoughts on this type of environment for enabling outstanding learning encouraging student engagement

  3. What is active learning? Learning by doing Increasing engagement Skills Increasing employability enhancement All of this relevant to UWE s 2020 strategy Approaches quite different to traditional teaching: Student centred Task based Practice oriented Team based Types of activity: Real life scenarios Simulations Online research Working as a team to produce a product

  4. TEAL environments A need for appropriate learning spaces for technology enhanced active learning Opportunities for collaboration Appropriate technology on hand

  5. Traditional PC labs Provide technology, but are they useful for collaboration and team work?

  6. Traditional seminar rooms lack technology for student use And some don t provide much opportunity for collaboration.

  7. Seminar rooms with collaborative tables More scope for collaborative work here? But still a lack of technology for student groups/teams (this is 3B064 pre-TEAL conversion)

  8. TEAL rooms Collaborative tables and technology This is 3B064, a basic, low cost TEAL room

  9. TEAL rooms Collaborative tables and technology This is 3C002 a higher spec installation acting as pilot for FBL new build

  10. Characteristics of a successful TEAL session Based on research and case studies: May involve flipped classroom or upside-down pedagogies Tutor acts as facilitator/coach rather than giver of knowledge Brief intro, but then minimal front of class may act as chair/moderator later on Tasks Structured and well planned. Team focussed, practice oriented real world tasks Peer assistance, evaluation and discussions within teams and between teams Screen sharing, other interactive technologies

  11. A wider context A tried and tested approach Has been in use in the USA for some time. 200+ Universities make use of tech enhanced active learning classrooms in the US e.g.: TEAL at MIT (Technology Enhanced Active Learning) SCALE-UP project at North Carolina State (Student Centred Active Learning Environments with Upside- down Pedagogies) TILE at Iowa (Transform, Interact, Learn. Engage) But a relatively new approach for UK universities e.g.: TBL at Bradford University (Team Based Learning) TEAL approaches at the University of Portsmouth SCALE-UP approaches at Nottingham Trent University Active Learning at Wolverhampton University
