  1. What Is Encore Learning? Presentation to Alexandria Senior Services

  2. MISSION Encore Learning is a local non-profit organization dedicated to providing with high-quality lifelong learning and social opportunities at a reasonable cost. We currently have about 1000 members mostly in the Arlington and Alexandria community. We celebrated our 20thyear of operation in 2022

  3. FUN THINGS TO DO Day-time activities for those 50+ in the Metro area College-level Academic Courses no tests, papers or projects! Clubs Special Events Must be a Member to Register $65 annual membership fee Courses are $55 each Clubs and Special Events are free

  4. ACADEMIC COURSES Spring and Fall Semesters Approximately 35 courses offered each semester in person; online; hybrid Courses offered in seven categories: Fine Arts, Theater & Music Health & Wellness History Law, Politics & Public Affairs Literature & Writing Science & Technology Social Sciences

SPECIAL EVENTS- Year Round Free Public Lectures Encore Learning Presents co-sponsored with Arlington County Public Library Twice Monthly on Mondays at 3:00 PM on Zoom Public lectures, panels, book talks by noted authors, and documentary films Member-only Group Tours Docent led tours of museums with limited participation, usually free pre-registration required Monday, December 11, 2023, 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM Robert E. Lee and Me a Reckoning with American History Ty Seidule, a retired brigadier general and Professor Emeritus of History at West Point, grew up revering Robert E. Lee. From his southern childhood to his service in the U.S. Army, every part of his life reinforced the Lost Cause myth. Now, he challenges the myths and lies of the Confederate legacy and explores why some of this country s oldest wounds have never healed. FREE COMMUNITY EVENTS Course Previews Every spring and fall before the start of a new semester Open House Each Instructor may give a brief introduction to their course Great introduction to our organization Library Lectures Monthly Encore Learning Presents series cosponsored with Arlington Central Library

  8. Volunteers are our lifeline! Around 1000 active members, 100+ active volunteers Volunteer Opportunities: Serve on Board of Directors or Community Advisory Council Teach a class (around 65 instructor volunteers annually) Serve on a committee Lead a club Assist with a special event (around 1000 active members, with over 100 active volunteers) Organization: Arlington-based Nonprofit established in 2002 Governed by Board of Directors elected from and by members Counseled by Community Advisory Council Four part-time staff Offices at Syphax Educational Center and GMU Arlington

BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP Known to improve quality of life for older adults Social getting out/online, seeing old friends, making new ones Emotional trying new things, being active builds self -esteem Intellectual keeping the brain engaged Physical getting up and outside, moving to/from activities
