What is Energy? What is Energy? Scientists define energy as the ability to do work. Measured in Joules (J) Modern civilization is possible because people have learned how to change energy from one form to another and then use it to do work People use energy to do the following To walk and bicycle To move cars along roads To move boats through water To cook food on stoves To make ice in freezers To light our homes and offices To manufacture products To send astronauts into space List the different types of energy that you know (source www.eia.gov)
Types of Energy Types of Energy
Law of Energy Conservation Law of Energy Conservation The law of conservation of energy says that energy is neither created nor destroyed When people use energy, it does NOT disappear rather it changes from one form of energy into another form of energy. Here are some examples of Energy Conversion; A car engine burns gasoline, converting the chemical energy in gasoline into mechanical energy Solar photovoltaic cells change radiant energy from the sun into electrical energy Energy changes form but the total amount of energy in the universe stays the same
Sources of Energy Sources of Energy Energy sources can be divided into two basic categories Renewable energy sources that can be easily replenished Nonrenewable energy sources that cannot be easily replenished Renewable and nonrenewable energy sources can be used As primary energy sources to produce useful energy such as heat Or they can be used to produce secondary energy sources such as electricity and hydrogen
