  1. ENGLISH WRITING WEEK SIX

  2. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY There are seven things that will destroy us: Wealth without work; Pleasure without conscience; Knowledge without character; Religion without sacrifice; Politics without principle; Science without humanity; Business without ethics. Mahatma Gandhi

  3. Seedfolks Activity Today we are going to ask the author Paul Fleischman some questions we have about his book. Then we are going to attempt to answer them as we think he might.

  4. STEP ONE: Step 1: Write down a question about any of the characters, events, setting, or theme you have. Your questions might seek clarification or interpretation. The answer to your question should not be found in the book. Note: Your questions should not be one that can be answered with a yes/no. Your question also should not be one that has a literal answer we could find in the book (example: What did Kim plant? Who is Wendell?)

  5. Examples of questions Why did Anna buy binoculars? Do you think Lateesha should give Curtis another chance? Why or why not? Why do you think so many mayors in cities across America are recommending that their citizens read this book?

  6. Step 2: Pass your journal and the question to the person sitting behind you. You will also receive someone's journal question. Consider the question as if you were the author and write down an answer to the question.

  7. Step 4: Continue to pass journal questions until each question has been answered by at least four other classmates.

  8. Reviews (Book, movie, art) Most reviews are written to recommend a specific book, movie, or artwork to an audience who might consider viewing, reading , or purchasing it. What should an effective review contain? A brief summary A description of the criteria on which the recommendation is based An analysis of the text s strengths and weaknesses how it measures up to the selected criteria A personal recommendation based on the evaluation

  9. Reviews Additional components of an effective review might include: A comparison or contrast with another text A sense of the impact of the text in light of past, current, or future events or issues A reason to consider the text regardless of the criteria it may or may not meet A narrowing of audience for whom the text may be acceptable or unacceptable

  10. JOURNAL ENTRY #4: THUMBS UP :) or THUMBS DOWN :( Write your personal review of the book Seedfolks. DO NOT go to an online book review site for this assignment. In writing the review, include the following: a) a brief summary in your own words of the book (no more than 50-75 words); b) the criteria you are using to evaluate the book (select at least 3); c) an analysis of how well the book meets each of your criteria; d) to whom you recommend the book and why or to whom you do not recommend the book and why. Bring one copy of your review and bring your completed Seedfolks chart to receive credit for reading it. If you did not read the book, I can give you another journal assignment for entry #4 (email me).
