DCU in the Community DCU in the Community acts as a bridge between the university - its staff, students and resources- and the local and regional community. It promotes sustainable community development and social regeneration through education. DCU in the Community is the flagship of DCU s civic engagement strategy and is widely regarded as a model of best practice, focussing on activities such as: Widening access and participation in higher education among underrepresented groups Student-led engagement, service learning and volunteering locally, regionally and through national platforms
Annual Outputs 160-180 learners 10-12 learning programmes: QQI L5 Bridge to Education (college preparation course for mature students) x 2 QQI L5 Psychology x 2 QQI L6 Community Organisation Management x 2 Digital Media x 2-3 Summer School Partner programmes: Boxing Clever, BJC Digital Media 180-200 hours educational guidance, mentoring and support 30+ applications to FE and HE; SUSI/BTEA assistance
Community Partnerships Firmly established in Ballymun and North Dublin with networks and reach expanded to Dublin City and Fingal over the past 4 years Strongly networked with local and regional community partners, statutory agencies and local authorities Joint educational/lifelong learning programme delivery: Sillogue Neighbourhood Centre; Urrus/BYAP/BLDTF/DCC; DNWAP, NS Partnership Learner referrals network Selected: Tusla, DCC, Pobal Gael, Focus Ireland, Barnardos, Rialto Community Drugs Team, Sophia Housing, Befriending Services, Men s Sheds, National Council for the Blind, Finglas South Residents Association, Romanians in Ireland, Better Finglas, CDETB Adult Education Service, Eastside and Docklands LES, BAP, University of Sanctuary
National Context Under the National Access Plan 2015-2019 HEIs are encouraged to strengthen the linkages with local communities and also to develop a greater range of alternative pathways into third level education. Goal 5: Develop regional and community partnership strategies for Access. In communities where there are lower than average levels of participation in higher education, initiatives should be developed in partnership with communities to address specific needs of the communities. Targeted initiatives developed in such ways can contribute in a meaningful way to encouraging education take up.
New DCU Engagement Strategy Further network with other education providers to create a joined up access and participation network potential for programme delivery in Fingal, NS Partnership areas Further develop targeted pre-entry initiatives for increasing access to higher education in communities with low participation rates, with a particular focus on students presenting further education qualifications, mature students and adult from SED areas. Double the amount of DCU schools and units engaging with the community and non-traditional students seeking access to higher education In association with DCU Student Support and Development, particularly DCU Access and DCU Mature Students Office, increase the number of students from DCU in the Community continuing to higher education
