Gender and Sexuality Exploration Exercise
Objective: To help teenagers understand the concepts of gender and sexu ality, and to promote empathy, respect, and inclusion.
Materials: Paper and pens Sticky notes Markers Chart paper or a whiteboard
Activity 1: Understanding Gender and Sexuality Definitions and Discussion: Start by defining key terms:sex, gender, gender identity, gender expressio n, sexual orientation. Explain the differences between them using examples. Encourage questions and open discussionto clarify any doubts.
Brainstorming: Hand out sticky notes to each participant. Ask them to write down words or phrases they associate with g ender and sexuality (e.g., "boy," "girl," "transgender," "gay," "bis exual"). Collect and stick these notes on a chart paper or whiteboard. Discuss the collected words/phrases and correct any misconce ptions.
Activity 2: Genderbread Person Introduce the Genderbread Person Create Your Own Genderbread Person: Provide each participant with a blank Genderbread Person template. Ask them to fillin their own template based on their understa nding of gender identity, gender expression, biological sex, an d sexual orientation.
Sharing and Reflection: Encourage participants to share their Genderbread Person with the group (optional). Reflect on the diversity of responses and discuss how everyone s experience is unique.
Activity 3: Empathy and Inclusion Scenarios and Role-Playing: Present different scenarios involvingpeople with diverse gender id entities and sexual orientations. Break into small groups and role- play how to respond to these scenarios with empathy and respect . Scenarios could include: A friend coming out as transgender. A classmate asking to be referred to with different pronouns. Encountering homophobic or transphobic comments.
Group Discussion: After roleplaying, come together as a large group to discuss eac h scenario. Talk about the feelings involved, how best to support each other , and how to create a more inclusive environment.
Conclusion: Summarise the key points learned during the exercise. Encourage participants to keep an open mind and continue lear ning about gender and sexuality. Remind everyone that understanding and respecting diversity m akes our communities stronger and more inclusive.
