Engaging Learning Through Remote Video Protocol
dynamic protocol for interactive learning using video responses. Adapted for remote settings, this technique encourages students to share ideas, ask questions, and engage in meaningful dialogue through platforms like Flipgrid. Enhance student collaboration and critical thinking skills with this innovative approach.

A/B Talk During Remote Learning: Making Use of Flipgrid Sima Faik, Sarah E. Goode STEM Academy Alec Shrode, Chicago Academy High School
Our In-Person A/B Partner Talk Protocol - Pushing to How/Why Explanations 1 2 Prewrite Sharing Your Ideas Partner A talks, Partner B listens. Individuals record their thinking in response to the teacher s prompt. I think ___________ happened because...(how/why idea). I think ___________ had something to do with... I think ___________ happened because...(how/why idea). I think ___________ had something to do with... 3 4 Revoice & Clarify Partner A listens, Partner B revoices the idea or asks for clarification. I heard you say ___________. Why do you think that? Would you clarify what you mean by ___________? Can you say more about (how / why) ___________ works the way it does? Response Partner A answers Partner B s questions or asks for clarification. In response to your question / what I meant was... I can add (how/why idea) to my original idea by saying I think _______ works the way it does because (how / why idea)... 5 6 We agree/disagree about (how/why idea) because... My idea about (how/why idea) changed when my partner said We used to think (initial how/why idea), and now we think (new how/why idea)... We still need to know more about (new how/why idea to explore). Switch Roles Compare & Contrast Ideas Both Partners talk and listen to reach consensus or capture a disagreement. Partners A and B switch roles and repeat steps 1-4. A B
How could we engage in this kind of back- and-forth during remote learning? One approach: We adapted the protocol to have students record and share asynchronous videos with each other. The protocol that follows was designed for Flipgrid, but other platforms that allow video responses to be exchanged could work too.
Section 1-Prewrite How does a new substance like rust form? I think ___________ happens because I m not sure, but I think My idea is______. Evidence that supports my idea is...

Section 3- Revoice and Clarify Step 1: Listen to your partner s video and write down a response in which you revoice their idea and ask for clarification. Responding to our partner s idea. I heard you say ___________. Why do you think that? Would you clarify what you mean by ___________? Can you say more about (how / why) ___________ works the way it does? Step 2: Recording & Sharing Our Response 1. While looking at your partner s video, click Add a comment underneath the video. 2. Record your Partner B response and post the video.
Section 4-Response Step 1: Watch your partner s response video and write down an answer to their question. In response to your question / what I meant was... I can add (how/why idea) to my original idea by saying I think _______ works the way it does because (how / why idea)... Step 2: Recording & Sharing Our Response 1. While looking at YOUR original video post, click Add a comment underneath the video. 2. Record your Partner A response and post the video.
Section 5-Compare & Contrast Ideas Both Partners listen to each other s responses and record notes about any areas of agreement and/or disagreement. My partner and I agreed about ____ because My partner and I disagreed about _____ because My partner talked about _(piece of evidence)_. This supports/does not support my idea because... My idea about (how/why idea) changed when my partner said We still need to know more about (new how/why idea to explore).
Section 6-Revising Our Ideas How does a new substance like rust form? I think ___________ happens because My idea is______. Evidence that supports my idea is A new substance like rust forms by....
