  2. Parents/Carers, Just a note to say first of all a massive thankyou for engaging in home learning with your children. We completely understand that these times are quite daunting and are so full of uncertainty. We will try our very best to keep these tasks as fun and as simple as we can, with minimal resourcing to help continue your children s phonic learning. Just a couple of notes to help make these tasks easier to understand and bust some of the jargon, Again do not feel pressured to complete all tasks given and if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask! Stay safe and take care Term(s) Grapheme Phoneme/Sound Explanation: How a sound looks written down ( sh, th, ng etc) A single unit of spoken sound. (shop, that, ring) Digraph Two letters that make one sound ( sh, ng, th, ff etc) Trigraph Three letters that make one sound (air, ear, igh) Two letters that make one sound with a letter in the middle (cake) Split Digraph Sound Buttons Dots and dashes used to represent phonemes within the written word: c a t . . . Segment: splitting a word into it s separate graphemes. Blend: To squash them together when reading. Nonsense words to help embed understanding of taught graphemes: eg: shazz bleth quig Segement/blend Alien Words
