Agenda What has changed between last fall and this spring? Discuss ways to engage students in their own learning Consider how pedagogy can reduce cheating Use technical resources to increase student engagement Practice Interactive Zoom activities Resources for Best Practices and Standards for Online and Remote Instruction Share available techniques that faculty can use in their asynchronous learning environments. Share take-aways and big ideas
What has changed between last fall and this spring? What were your big take-aways from our last workshop? Add your thoughts about what is working and what is not working here
Ways to Engage Students in Their Own Learning Assignment Choice At the beginning of the course, offer students a variety of assignment types. Ask them to select which assignment types they would prefer to have in the class. Activity types might include virtual discussions, in-class group work, individual or group research and presentations, timed quizzes, writing assignments, reading and lecture comprehension questions, midterm exam, final exam. As the instructor, you can assign each of these options a point value so that the students can determine the assignment types that get to the points possible for the course. For example, students might select multiple timed quizzes and the time quizzes are each worth 5 points, they might select a midterm exam that is worth 20 points and a final exam that is worth 30 points. What are the sticking points related to this idea? Share your thoughts here: https://padlet.com/tdionne7/g06xg7g1kxxl9mmw Timer: https://timer.onlineclock.net
Collate Ideas, Generate Lists, etc. Padlet thoughts and ideas for how this tool could be used? Let s Collaborate on this Padlet: https://padlet.com/tdionne7/4voqgw8f3rcnjsea
Interactive Zoom Activities Feedback Review Ask students to look at the feedback you provided on an assignment; in Zoom groups ask students to share what they learned from the feedback you provided. This helps students internalize your feedback
WheelDecide Randomize Who Answers the Next Question
Reducing Cheating in Remote Classes Get to know your students, their names, their writing style, etc. Let students provide their own examples or scenarios, or context. Allow students to build knowledge using those same examples. Give students a problem that is not solved correctly. Ask them to correct the solution. Ask students to describe how they solved a problem.
