What do we know about spelling? What do we know about spelling? There are . letters in the alphabet but phonemes (distinct sounds) represented by even more graphemes (letters and combinations of letters). Can you think of some common combinations of 2 or 3 letters that make a single sound? For example: sh / th / wh / ch / tch / br / -ck / -rl And don t forget double letters! And then there are those silent letters! For example: knows / doubt / reign Every word contains at least one and the most common letter in English is
