Challenge: Why is an apostrophe used in the two different highlighted words?
Day 1 Task Answer the questions about chapter 6 and record this into your books. 1. On page 59, what did Bertie and the lady have in common? 2. His eyes were wide with sudden alarm. What does this sentence tell us about how the boy was feeling? 3. I loved my books they took me outside the park walls. What does sentence tell us about how the lady was feeling when she was younger? Challenge She moved around the house like a cold shadow. What does this tell us about the character called Nolips ?
Day 1 Answers 1. On page 59, what did Bertie and the lady have in common? Both were an only child. Their mums were unwell Their dads were away a lot. 2. His eyes were wide with sudden alarm. What does this sentence tell us about how the boy was feeling? - This shows that the boy was worried / anxious / afraid of being caught and punished for being out of school. 3. I loved my books they took me outside the park walls. What does sentence tell us about how the lady was feeling when she was younger? - She may have felt trapped inside her home and wanted an escape. - She felt lonely, could go into the world of other characters. - Her only way out of the loneliness and boredom was through books as she could get lost within a book.
Day 2 Adverbials of time and place
Time adverbials A few minutes later, I reached the watering hole. Yesterday evening, I heard mum and dad arguing. We played in the park after school. If you start with an adverbial, use a comma (not just the first word!
Where adverbials Beside the oak tree sat a small boy. Vs A small boy sat beside a oak tree. At the end of the road was an old lady. An old lady stood at the end of the road. Vs Most where adverbials sound better at the end of a sentence! But they can be used at the beginning if you are careful.

Day 2 - answers Some variation in answers.
Day 3 Apostrophes Apostrophes are used for two reasons: 1. Contraction / omission (letters left out) 2. Possession (when you own something)
Omission = when something is left out To show when words have been shortened didn t = did not I can not come to the party. I can t come to the party. The apostrophe shows that there are letters missing.
Apostrophes for possession Apostrophes are also used to show possession. Mrs Clarke s computer. The computer belongs to Mrs Clarke and there is only one Mrs Clarke, so the apostrophe goes before the s
More possessive apostrophes Oliver s book bag. the book bag belongs to Oliver. Bob s football boots. the boots belong to Bob. Julie s toy doll. the toy belongs to Julie.
Plural possession (belongs to more than one person) More than one thing = plural When more than one person owns something, the apostrophe is written after the s . The players changing room. (more than one player) The teachers staffroom. (more than one teacher)

Day 4 Over the next two days, you will be using empathy to plan and write a informal letter. This will be written from the lady s perspective when she was a girl, and when she first knew Bertie.
What will I need to include in a informal letter? 1. Address of recipient (person who receives letter) 2. Letter opening 3. Main content (body) written in paragraphs 4. Letter closing
But what will we include in our letter to Bertie? First of all, read the next few pages of chapter 7. Context for our letters: - - - Bertie and the girl become very close friends. But they only see each other every Sunday. This isn t enough. So instead, they write to each other.
Day 4 Task - plan your letter into paragraphs Paragraph 1 Purpose of letter are you missing them? Writing to tell them something? Paragraph 2 Go into more detail. What else do you have to tell them? Are you looking forward to anything? Any plans for next Sunday? Challenge Paragraph 3 End your letter with a closing sentence like See you soon! I can t wait to hear back from you! Plan in some time adverbials and apostrophes. Which will you use? Where will you use them?

Day 5 Mr Ps example Cranbourne Chase School 42 Bath Road Marlsborough Wiltshire SN8 1PG Using apostrophes correctly Opening to letter on the line below the date 10th May 1935 Dear Bertie, I know it s only been a few days, but I am really missing you! I just wanted to write to you so I could share what an awful week I ve had. Time adverbials to start paragraphs On Sunday evening, when I got back from seeing you, I was greeted my Nolips . She was in a foul mood! She demanded to know where I d been. I didn t tell her though. I couldn t risk being grounded. Luckily for me, daddy came home and saved me from a caning. But things only got worse from there. The following morning, Daddy had to go back to work. Daddy s work had him travelling, so he was gone for a long time.
Day 5 Task: Use your plan to write your informal letter to Bertie. Make sure you have a purpose to your letter. Write about how you are feeling, and maybe what you are looking forward to. Clouds Use my letter structure and the sentence openers in paragraph 1, 2 and 3 to help. Challenge Use apostrophes accurately, and make sure you include time adverbials to structure your writing.
