  1. Trade and Gender Gap in Jordan Proposal Presentation By: Taleb Awad-Warrrad Professor of Economics WTO-Chair Holder University of Jordan Chair Programme July 8, 2021

  2. Introduction Females in Jordan enjoy equal access to education and health However, female participation in labour force in Jordan is only 15% and considered among the lowest world-wide. Efforts to close the gender-employment-gap in Jordan and in the region in general is achieving very limited success if any. The main focus of the proposed research project is on exploring and analysing the relationship between trade and gender participation in Jordan and to shed light on the role that international trade may play in empowering females and enhancing their contribution in labour force.

  3. Key proposal questions The main questions raised in the proposal are: What is the relationship between trade openness policy and female participation in in labour market in Jordan? What are the policy measures and instruments that are best suited to make international trade a tool for women's empowerment and equitability.

  4. Background UNCTAD did interesting studies at the country level on the impacts of trade policies on women as consumers and producers and on other dimensions of their lives. However, their studies covered only three countries: Bhutan, Cape Verde and Lesotho. This research is expected to: first, econometrically measure the strength of the relationship between trade openness (among other factors) and females participation in labour force second, to examine and suggest different methods, practices and policies needed to enhance gender equality in Jordan as a model in the region.

  5. Expected Contribution to Curriculum development Published research out of this project (at least tow papers) should augment graduate courses in the economics including international economics, theory of international trade, economic selected topics in economics. It will be implemented by WTOCHAIR TEAM AT UJ during the academic year (2021) curriculum department for of several business development and

Expected Research outputs Two professional expected out of this research project: The first on the relationship between trade and females empowerment/participation The second on trade policies, practices and methods to maximize gender equality Two groups of specialized researchers will be selected competitively consideration (1) area of specialization of the researcher and (2)the degree of contribution to building research capacity and developing practical research topics for PhD and master students. research papers are taking into

  7. Expected Outreach events related to dissemination of the research A general conferences on the research main theme; link between trade and gender, will be organized by the UJ-Chair holder at the school of Business, the University of Jordan, it is planned for December 2021. A Seminar for policy makers and graduate students is planned on November 2021. at least one policy brief is expected out of the two research papers to provide evidence-based policy advice to help readers make informed decisions.

  8. SUSTAINABILITY ISSUE The conference proceedings book and the published papers out of this project will be added to the WTO-Chair s library at the school of Business-UJ to be available both in paper and digital formats for faculties and students. Additional copies will be sent to relevant interested public and private parties. Hopefully such outputs and resources will contribute to the visibility and sustainability of the UJ- WTO-Chair.
