EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILL IN SIMULATED ENVIRONMENT INDIVIDUAL INTERPERSONAL LEVEL DR.PIYUSH GUPTA ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
Interpersonal communication- Communication is a fundamental clinical skill that if performed competently and efficiently facilitates the establishment of relationship of trust between the medical staff and patient .
Goal of communication- Communication strategies can enhance the learning .the goal of all communication is to bring about a change in the desired direction of the person who receives the communication. Communication may be cognitive (increase in knowledge), affective(changing existing pattern of behavior and attitude ) and psychomotor (acquiring new skills )
The main components of communication are 1. Sender 2. Receiver 3. Message 4. Channel (Inter personal communication ,mass media, folk media) 5. Feedback
The interpersonal communication defined as the communication that occurs between two people in the context of their relationship and that as evolves helps to negotiate and defined the relationship.
Features- It is communication between two persons. Face to face conservation between two people is the most frequent form of interpersonal communication. It is a strong deep association between two or more people that may range in duration from brief to enduring. The health worker is an important of the health care team that must work in co-operation and harmony for the care of patient
Interpersonal communication is the process of sharing both ideas and emotions verbally and nonverbally with another person. It allows us to interact with and understand others in our personal and professional lives. Interpersonal skills are important for communicating and working with groups and individuals in your personal and professional life. People with strong interpersonal skills tend to build good relationships and can work well with others. They understand family, friends, coworkers and clients well. People often enjoy working with colleagues who have good interpersonal skills.
The most common channel of communication is the interpersonal or face to face communication being personal and direct it is most effective form of communication. Other benefits of interpersonal skills include the ability to solve problems and make good decisions. You can use interpersonal communication skills and the ability to understand others to come to the best solution or make the best decision for everyone involved.
Principles- Learn everyone s name (Never address anyone by nick name ) Respect everyone s individually. Do not impose anything on anybody. Keep emotions under control. Do not give and take personal favour. Do not be afraid to admit ignorance . The team leader should not make any excuse regarding his or her responsibility .
Conti. Develop the habits of listening and focus attention on the problem. Do not do or say anything that will disturb others faith. Give importance to others and practice justice. There should be mutual understanding between members, they should be willing to give and take corrections.
The relationship between the members of a group should be decent and considerate. Avoid arguments and always have a smiling face. Prepare yourself mentally to accept the worst if necessary .
Phases of inter personal relationship- This is always client centred and goal directed . It is objective rather than subjective. The intent of a professional relationship is for client behavior to change. It is a limited relationship , with the goal of helping the client find more satisfying behavior patterns and coping strategies and increase self worth. The orientation phase correlates with the assessment phase of nursing process.
Conti. The identification component of the working phase corresponds to the planning phase . The final resolution phase of the relationship correspond to evaluation phase of nursing process.
Pre interaction phase- The pre-interaction phase is the only one in which the client does not directly participate . Awareness of professional goal is important . This phase occurs before you meet the client. In this phase you will gather information about the patient .
Orientation phase- Also called as introductory phase , requires to sets the manner and tone for the rest of communication. The health worker enters the communication in the stranger role and begins the process of developing trust by providing the client with basic information (purpose , nature nad time available for interview or communication) It begins when you meet the patient , the main goal is to establish rappot and trust. The verbal and nonverbal communication occurs during this phase .
Working phase- It is the planning phase , the conservation turns active problem solving related to assess health care need. In this phase patients discuss deeper with their issues. It is a active part of communication. This mainly focus on self direction and self management to whatever extent is possible in promoting the client health and well being. Key communication goals are to assist the client to clarify feeling and concern.
Exploration phase - Use of professional assistance for problem solving alternatives . The principles of interview techniques must be used in order to explore, understand and adequately deal with the underlying problem .
Termination phase- In this phase , the health worker and patient evaluate the patient responses to treatment and explore the meaning of the relationship and what goal have been achieved. This phase is the conclusion phase of the communication. if communication has been effective , the terminal prepares for further interactions.
