  2. 25 ! / p. 84 Reader s Bank Level 5 Chewing gum is a great way to get rid of bad breath. But it does more than that. Chewing helps people remember more. Some scientists tested the effects of chewing gum on people s ___________. They divided people into two groups. One group chewed gum for two minutes, and the other group did not chew gum. Then, both groups were asked to memorize the same information. The group who chewed gum for two minutes remembered 30 percent more of the information than the people who did not. According to the scientists, chewing increases blood flow to the brain and makes the brain more active. As a result, people s memories improve. Now you have a good excuse for chewing gum. But don t do it in class!

  3. 26 , / p.86 Reader s Bank Level 5 Are you a poor swimmer? Don t worry. You will float without any effort in the Dead Sea. The Dead Sea is a lake located along the border between Israel and Jordan. ( ) Amazingly, swimmers are able to float on the surface of the Dead Sea without much effort. ( ) They can even read books while lying on the water. ( ) Since the Dead Sea is on low lying land, all of its water flows in from surrounding areas. ( ) Unlike other lakes, the water has no way to flow out. ( ) The only way out is to evaporate. This is why the lake is so salty. In fact, the Dead Sea is eight times saltier than normal oceans. This makes the water denser and floating is easier. Because of its extremely high salt content, however, no animals or plants can survive in the Dead Sea. What makes this possible?

  4. 27 ! _1 / p.88 Reader s Bank Level 5 Sometimes we can t control our feelings and do or say things we will regret later. When you find yourself in this situation, it s better to put your feelings in your emotional backpack. That is, instead of dealing with your strong emotions right then, wait until you calm down. Suppose a friend says something unpleasant to you as you re going to math class to take a test. You might feel like yelling at him, but you d regret it later if you do. That s when you should put your feelings in your emotional backpack.

  5. 27 ! _2 / p.88 Reader s Bank Level 5 , if you keep adding your emotions in the backpack, it could get so full that your emotions may burst out. This will make you get angry at someone for no reason. Once in a while, pull out the heaviest feeling from the backpack that bothers you, and deal with it. Talk politely to the person who upset you. Describe how you felt without accusing them. You might find out some misunderstanding. Or they may apologize for upsetting you unintentionally.
