Why EPICS Chat? Tech-Talk serves us well, doesn t it? 2 Tech-Talk has ~1000 list members and is archived forever Not everyone is comfortable asking questions in front of 1000 people Not every statement is intended for eternity Long-term archived data is getting outdated Need a real-time communication tool between telecon and email Discussions in smaller groups, around topics of interest

Concepts Users, homeservers, rooms, spaces 4 A User has a unique ID in in the system (like an email address) A Homeserver is a point of contact for users A Room is a conceptual place where users can send and receive events A Space is a conceptual place that contains other rooms and spaces Room history (content) is synchronized between homeservers whose users are participating
