Issues/Business of the 80thGeneral Convention Election of a new President and Vice President of the House of Deputies Elections for other offices of The Episcopal Church: Trustees of the Church Pension Group Executive Council (the Vestry of General Convention between General Conventions) Essential changes to the Constitution and Canons to address term limits of offices affected by the delayed General Convention
Postponement of Regular General Convention Due to the Pandemic, the regularly scheduled (2021) triennial General Convention was postponed to 2022. Ongoing COVID concerns led leadership of The Episcopal Church to shorten General Convention from eight days to four days (July 8-11). In-Person meeting is smaller with far fewer participants. Only Deputies (and first alternates), Bishops, Staff, and essential volunteers will attend. Legislative Committees have been meeting virtually for months to consider proposed resolutions submitted during past four years. Legislative hearings at General Convention will be limited
General Convention 2022 Business will be limited to essential items: Elections Approval of the Budget (2023-24) Legislation that is needed to allow the Church to operate until next regular General Convention (2024). Deadline to submit resolutions was June 6. Legislative Committees will prioritize proposed resolutions, using questions on next slide.
Questions for Prioritizing Legislation: Is this resolution needed for The Episcopal Church to participate actively in God s mission and function effectively between now and the 81st General Convention? Does this resolution provide an important opportunity to maintain and renew the vitality of the church s worship? Does this resolution substantively change the Church s witness on a significant issue of the day? Does this resolution call for work that would be difficult to accomplish in the shortened work period between now and the 81st General Convention? Would this resolution require significant floor time for debate that might not be available at the 80th General Convention? Could this resolution be addressed at the 81st General Convention without significantly impeding the church s ability to respond to God s mission in the next two years? Would it benefit from more study?
