You can register if you satisfy all the outcomes specified in the application form You have the required engineering educational qualification You meet the post qualification experience requirement You paid the application fee (an arm and a leg and some. . . ) OR ..you could apply through the alternative route

  8. Registration requirements (Contd) Pathways ? ? Adapted from: ECSA, E-23-P

  9. Foreign Qualifications? 10. Can Academics Register Academics must also satisfy the Competency standards via the 11 outcomes for their registration cadre. You do problem solving, management and all the others if you just define these in terms of your academic work and research. Think outside the box when you fill in the forms We will do a special talk exclusively as guidance for academics

  11. First: Obtain and study all the . documents provided by ECSA The following ECSA documents are to be studied to ensure you understand the requirements for the preparation of your application. Documents are referred to under PE, PT, PCE, PN R-02-STA-PE/PT/PCE/PN, Revision 1: 20 August 2020 Competency Standard for Registration in Professional Categories, referred to as R-02. R-08-PT: Guide to the Competency Standard for Registration as a Professional Engineering Technologist referred to as R-08.. The website link is: https://www.ecsa.co.za/EcsaDocuments/sitepages/ecsa%20documents.aspx

  12. References ECSA website under the folder Documents under the Heading 3.3.2 New Registration for Professional Engineering Technologists Website https://www.ecsa.co.za/EcsaDocuments/sitepages/ecsa%20documents.aspx Success in registration is to comply with all eleven outcomes required by ECSA.

  13. Forms required for Alternative Route Registration If you want to register via the alternative route the following forms are required: Training and Experience Outline Form B2.1 TEO Educational Development Report Form B18-EDR only outcomes 1 to 5 Engineering Report Form B2.3 ER only outcomes 6 to 11 This process was discussed in detail in Toolbox 13, & Sept 2022

  14. 1 Before you fill in the Documents Study the guidelines: R-08-PT: Guide to the Competency Standards for Registration as a Professional Engineering Technologist. Make sure you read it all and understand the contents. Fill in what is asked, not what you think they should know. Peer Review Process: Technologists assessed by Pr Tech Eng. Assessors are all Volunteers using their own time. Only your report to judge you by, they don t know your work.

  15. 2. Understand the requirements The documents give all the required information in detail, make sure you read and understand it all before you start. First start preparing your initial draft, after a couple of pages, go and re-read the documents again and adjust your approach. You want to re-read the ECSA documentation a number of times during preparation and then a final time before you submit. This is a meticulous process of writing and editing to ensure that you submitted the required evidence in the format asked for.

  16. Competency standards Group A Engineering Problem solving What outcomes are applicable? Outcome 1: Define, investigate and analyse a broadly-defined engineering problem Outcome 2: Design or develop solutions of broadly-defined engineering problems Outcome 3: Comprehend and apply knowledge: principles, specialist knowledge, jurisdictional and local knowledge

  17. Competency standards (Cont.) Group A Engineering Problem solving Requirement It is based on your theoretical knowledge and practical experience as well as your ability to solve broadly-defined engineering problems. Problem solving is NOT only design.

  18. Competency standards (Cont.) Group B Managing Engineering Activity What outcomes are applicable? Outcome 4: Manage part or all of one or more of your broadly-defined engineering activities Outcome 5: Communicate clearly with others in the course of your engineering activity Requirement (Engineering Project Management) with good interpersonal skills (Presentation of your work) Here you must be able to demonstrate technical leadership

  19. Competency standards (Cont.) Group C Risk and Impact Mitigation What outcomes are applicable? Outcome 6: Recognise and address the reasonably foreseeable social, cultural and environmental effects of a broadly-defined engineering activity Outcome 7: Meet all legal and regulatory requirements and protect the health and safety of persons in the course of your broadly-defined engineering activity Requirement Here you must be able to demonstrate your recognition of, and obligation to society, the profession and the environment as well as your commitment to abide by the professional Code of Conduct

  23. Writing your report In your report you demonstrate your knowledge of the theories and practical experience you applied in your engineering work. Your report and presentations need to be clear, concise, short and to the point. Don t be shy and downplay your contribution, give a true picture. Make sure the spelling, grammar and format is correct. Describe your responsibility and contribution, NOT the project. Report on your own work actually done, don t fabricate.

  24. Writing your report . Communication ability and ability to interpret is judged by way the application is filled in. Poor language gives a very poor impression. Don t use acronyms, trade jargon, CAPITALS. Is your report a true picture of yourself ? Type in the required font, don t use script.

  25. Referee reports Referee reports: 3 x ECSA registered professionals required. They comment on your engineering proficiency, conduct and delegated responsibility from personal knowledge. The applicant must ensure the following: Referee s registration status at ECSA is active. Referees are registered in the category as stated at ECSA

  26. Organigrams Indicate your position in the organization and technical persons above and under you. Do not indicate the cleaners, labourers. Name of incumbent, registration category, job title, qualification One level above, below and beside No shading but indicate own position Not the whole company reduced to A4 M Y Bossman Pr Tech Eng Executive Director M Dip Tech

  27. Summary of Training and Experience The Summary of Training and Experience is an important document but many applicants tend to overlook it. The Summary of Training and Experience is to be completed only after the TER or TEO is completed. Ensure each period is stated in weeks. The total of all periods to be stated in years and months.

  28. Other Matters Provide concise, clear, relevant information. Why did you attend the site meeting: to do the braai? explain your involvement. DON T provide books of designs etc. DON T include all your CPD certificates: list them. Engineering content is King! Don t try to rush ECSA because you waited long to apply.

  29. Interviews The interview is an extension of your application form. You are asked to explain grey areas. Be very worried if you did not report on your own work. Don t talk down to interviewers, they are peers, colleagues. Prepare your 15 min presentation professionally. Cover all outcomes clear and concise. You WILL be caught out if it is not your own work.

  30. Appeals An appeal costs the same as new application. If upset you did not get registered, cool down, discuss. Very few is successful. Ask for information interview to understand your shortcomings. Better to get deferred since it gives you the opportunity to correct your shortcomings
