Students can only be checked out for the day through the school s front office. Medication can only be administered by the school nurse.

  5. Important Information Report any arrests to administration within three days. ***Failure to report an arrest can be cause for immediate termination. Do not transport students in your car or take them home. Refrain from making personal calls or sending notes or texts to students. 6. Confidentiality Uphold confidentiality at all times. Student information is protected by state law. As a substitute teacher, you will come into contact with knowledge of grades, behavior, and socio- economic conditions. There is NEVER a reason to take this information from school and discuss it with others (or social media).

  7. Child Abuse Any school employee (including a substitute teacher) who knows or reasonably believes that a child has been neglected or physically or sexually abused, must immediately notify campus administration.

  8. Daily Routine Dress professionally per district dress code. Arrive on time (early). Follow the teacher s lesson plan and schedule as given to you. Do not adlib. Substitutes are not allowed to bring their personal children to the assigned classroom for the day. If you have children at campus they can wait before or after school in your classroom.

  9. Check in at the campus office and wear your identifying badge or lanyard. Report immediately if your badge or lanyard is lost. Get office extension and secretaries name in case you need to call from the room. Prior to Entering the Classroom Ask about special procedures and schedules such as fire drills, etc. Find out if any extra duties are associated with the assignment such as lunch, after school bus duty, etc. Ask about any school-wide events planned for the day such as assemblies, field trips, pep rally, etc. Familiarize yourself with attendance procedures. Review student medical concerns in the teachers notes.

  10. In the Classroom Prior to Student Arrival Review posted classroom expectations and rules. Familiarize yourself with the evacuation map and emergency procedures. Identify any special needs or student allergies in the classroom. Read and understand the lesson plans and daily schedule. Locate the necessary books and materials for the day. Get acquainted with audiovisual equipment; ask for help if needed. Check for seating charts, if applicable. Learn the phone numbers and office contacts. Welcome students confidently as they arrive.

  11. Classroom Management Engage Students be sure you have the attention of everyone in your classroom before you start your lesson. Do not attempt to teach over the chatter of students not paying attention. Direct Instruction begin each class by telling the students exactly what will be happening. The teacher outlines what he/she and the students will be doing this period. Time limits may be set for some tasks. You may choose to state expectations for behavior prior to the activity or lesson. Provide verbal praise and positive reinforcement. Always maintain direct supervision of students. Remain calm and composed; avoid losing your temper.

  12. Classroom Management Monitoring Actively move around room. Check on progress and provide individualized instruction as needed. Modeling Teachers who are courteous, prompt, enthusiastic, in control, patient and organized provide examples for students through their behavior. Setting an example is not the main means of influencing others; it is the only means. -Albert Einstein

  13. Discipline Document any incidents that need to be reported to the classroom teacher or campus administration. When sending a student to the office for discipline issues, the substitute teacher maintains the duties of supervision and care for both the individual child and the remainder of the class. Actions to consider include: - Utilize the phone/radio to call the office. - Send a student with another student to the office. - Have another teacher watch your class while you take the child.

  14. If You Need Help Talk with grade level or content area teachers. Ask your neighbor next door or across the hall. Secretaries are great resources, get their phone extension. Principals/APs are there to help. Never be afraid to ask questions.

  15. Instruct students to tidy up and clean the area around their desks. Remind students about their homework assignments. Organize and neatly stack any papers submitted by students. Ensure all classroom materials are accounted for. Write a brief summary of your day and leave it for the classroom teacher. Leave notes for the teacher regarding any important student observations. Provide feedback for the teacher on Frontline, especially highlighting any significant details. Ensure the classroom is clean and organized before leaving. Turn off all lights and equipment to support energy conservation (FISD promotes cost-saving through energy efficiency). At the End of Each Class Period or Day
