  1. INTERVIEWING TIPS Prof. Hilary Botein, ITF Jake Cohen Portions of this handout were adapted by Baruch ITF Denisse Andrade from a workshop from Taking IT. Source: https://tinyurl.com/y7fxv9h8

  2. PREPARATION What? Why? Who? When? Where? How?

  3. WHAT? 1. What is the interview for? Think about what specific questions will you ask the person you re interviewing. 2. Organize the story Every interview tells a story What do I want to say? Create chart of how things connect to one another Keep in a place you can keep referring to in the process, and have the final in your hand when you conduct the interview.

  4. TECHNOLOGY Test your tech!! Practice: Recording How close to the mic you need to be Whether ambient noise is a problem (consider whereyou ll be doing your interview: will it be crowded?) Downloading the interview file off your phone (VERY IMPORTANT)

  5. HOW? Have some basic facts of those you will interview. If possible, do some research on them. Inform your interviewee about the length of the interview and the equipment you will be using (video camera, audio recording, etc). Remember they might ask for the questions ahead of time, which you should send and note that things may change a bit once the conversation/interview is under way.

  6. STARTING THE INTERVIEW Before getting started, have them sign a release form, and briefly explain what it states. Always introduce yourself: Who are you, what are you doing, what is this for, and always ask your interviewee to introduce themselves on the audio recorder You don t have to start asking questions right away Conversational without adding your voice (avoid interruptions or inserting your opinions) Make people feel comfortable, trust and talk to you. Ask your questions but don t stick to them Keep in mind the story map and major topics

  7. CONDUCTING THE INTERVIEW 1. Focus 2. Take notes 3. Find something NEW 4. Feature a diversity of views and people 5. Show respect: of privacy, of difference, etc. 6. Don t be too clever 7. Listen actively (and observe body language) 8. Control your feelings

  8. AFTERWARDS As soon as possible download the audio onto your computer Write a brief post-interview summary/assessment Where does the information fit into your story? How did you feel interviewing this person? Are there follow-up questions needed (via email?) Was there anything that surprised you or that you expected a different answer? Adjust your other questions for subsequent interviews based on this one
