MAN UP BIBLE SERIES IRON MAN 2 How to be a Mentor Lesson Six
The Real World This is the last lesson in this IRON MAN 2 Series. I want to focus on how you can establish a mentoring program in your Corps. Mentoring is a way to grow leadership in your Corps. It allows local leaders the chance to be involved in the ministry of The Salvation Army in a way that the founder wanted it. Mentoring is never a program it is always about relationships. You cannot force mentoring. You can foster an environment where mentoring can take wings and grow. Look into your own soul. Are you a person who makes commitments but is not willing to pay the price if the going gets tough? Look around you right now. Are you close enough to someone that you could begin to mentor them without any formal program beginning. A Son in Law? It is going to take some guts but the reward is worth all the worry!
The Real Word ACTS 2:17 (NIV) In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.
Real Talk We are looking for Mentors? Would you be one? Are you prepared to pay the price to mentor? Will you attend a retreat to put a mentor plan in place?
Real Steps How to start the program in your Corps: 1. Invite all the potential Mentee s to a retreat and explain your mentor plan. 2. Invite all the mentors to a retreat and explain your plan. 3. Have informal interest groups with both attending. 4. Do things like: Breakfasts, Retreats, Interest Groups, Work Projects, Mission Projects, Field Trips that will set up an environment for relationships to form. 5. Send them back into the Corps and see what happens. 6. If it all works right it will not be another program but will strengthen all the other programs in your Corps. 7. Do not be concerned if only a few mentor relationships form. Any is better than what was happening, which was nothing! 8. Do not push too much to begin with. A phone call once a week and meeting once a month is a great start! 9. Your Corps Officer must push this mentor environment including being a part of it! Leadership must have a full buy in!
