Industry Disruptors more venues to manage - your website, social media feeds, terrestrial broadcast signal, and live events audience experience changed = much more interactive and distracted, on demand availability public safety issues to address: climate events, violence, mental health crises, infrastructure strain, COVID, these things are beyond just the newsrooms concern The misinformation age we live in and all media being a favorite target of purveyors of conspiracy theories and troll farms workplace culture change economic volatility: inflation, supply/demand disruption, growing income disparity, fundraising model challenges, and lack of affordable health care and housing
What Is leadership anyway? Leadership is not rank, privilege, titles, or money. Leadership is responsibility. Peter Drucker Ultimately, leadership is not about glorious crowning acts. It's about keeping your team focused on a goal and motivated to do their best to achieve it, especially when the stakes are high and the consequences really matter. It is about laying the groundwork for others' success, and then standing back and letting them shine. Chris Hadfield, Astronaut
Key Concepts What do leaders do? What do those who support a leader want? What makes a leader? What is leadership about?
What Matters Most? The art of communication is the language of leadership. Jeff Humes, lawyer Communication is about 20% what you know and 80% about how you feel about what you know. Jim Rohn, businessman
Small Group Break Outs Short round of introductions - these are new groups Please designate a scribe/report back person - you will have 3-5 minutes for report back to the full group Based on what you learned about Social Styles - what would folks in your group like others to know about how best to communicate with them? How can you use this information to address balance on a team? If your group had a theme song - what would it be?
Reminder: Small Group Guidelines 1. Equal Participation. Self-govern and guide one another s behavior to ensure equal participation. No monopolizing conversation; no free pass to be silent. Creative outcomes require everyone s opinions be heard. 2. Speak with intention. Note what has relevance to the conversation. Focus on what matters; avoid tangential conversations. Be present in the moment. 3. Contribute your thinking. Speak your mind & heart. 4. Listen to understand. Defer judgment. Honor each individual s unique contributions 5. Link and connect diverse perspectives. Build on the ideas of others. Tend to the group. Remain aware of the impact of your style of engagement. Govern yourself.
The Art of Team Building People are the foundation. Design matters. Shared goals and values make it shine. Great teams demonstrate balance, integrity, and respect
What about capacity? We are good at focusing on who, what, when, and where and calling it management or using that to define our capacity level. Without the why there is no mojo. Without the mojo, capacity is meaningless.
