The Promise of an Eternal Kingdom the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house. 12When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, 15but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. 16And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever. 2 Samuel 7:11-16

The Promise of an Eternal Kingdom God s covenant with Abraham: God will bless Abraham s descendants and bless all the families of earth through them God s covenant with Israel at Sinai: God intends to bring about this blessing as Israel lives in covenant obedience to His Law and is exalted as a kingdom of priests and a holy nation in fallen world God s covenant with David: God will raise up a king from David s line to lead His people to do His will and fulfill His plan The covenants sketch a silhouette of Jesus, who would come to fulfill them all through His life, death, resurrection, and ascension
The Consequence of a Fleeting Sin David abuses his power and authority to get what he wants and then to try to cover up his sin In this moment, David is not much different than Saul The Lord s steadfast love will not depart from David, but David will face just consequences for his sin
The Consequence of a Fleeting Sin 9Why have you despised the word of the Lord, to do what is evil in his sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and have taken his wife to be your wife and have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. 10Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife. 13David said to Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said to David, The LORD also has put away your sin; you shall not die. 14Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the LORD, the child who is born to you shall die. 2 Samuel 12:9-10, 13-14
The Consequence of a Fleeting Sin Saul, David, and Solomon 1) A rise to greatness 2) A turning point involving sin 3) A response to the Lord s rebuke David did what Saul and Solomon didn t: he repented
The Wisdom of a Repentant Heart repentance is a spiritual medicine made up of six special ingredients: 1) Sight of sin, 2) Sorrow for sin, 3) Confession of sin, 4) Shame for sin, 5) Hatred for sin, 6) Turning from sin. -Thomas Watson, The Doctrine of Repentance
The Wisdom of a Repentant Heart Sight of sin For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Psalm 51:3
The Wisdom of a Repentant Heart Sorrow for sin Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice. Psalm 51:8
The Wisdom of a Repentant Heart Confession of sin Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. Psalm 51:4
The Wisdom of a Repentant Heart Shame for sin Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!... Hide your face from my sins Psalm 51:2, 9
The Wisdom of a Repentant Heart Hatred for sin Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! Psalm 51:1-2
The Wisdom of a Repentant Heart Turning from sin Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Psalm 51:10

The Wisdom of a Repentant Heart Repentance is where the Christian life begins And repentance is where the Christian life matures
The Wisdom of a Repentant Heart Repentance is where the Christian life begins And repentance is where the Christian life matures It is not falling into water that drowns, but lying in it. It is not falling into sin that damns, but lying in it without repentance. -Thomas Watson
The Wisdom of a Repentant Heart If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9
