  11. INNOVA MEASURE IV: Overview WP1 WP2 Growth of innovative enterprises WP3 WP4 STI Indicators, Statistical & Econometric support Europe in the global network of foreign R&I investments Dissemination Res. Exc., IOI, EIS/SII Innovative M&As as indicators of start-up and scale-up activities Robotics, fintech, AI, platform: Identify firms and sectors; Measure performance Data compilation on K-I investment Workshops Input for communication purposes Descriptive analysis (network) Econometric and Statistical Support Impact of K-I investment on Innovation

  12. Why we care about innovative scale-ups: the EU s lag Non-Employer firms: US lead Employer firms: EU lead

  13. Dynamics: EUs lead in the micro

  14. Rate of high-growth enterprises per million inhabitants EU17 vs US (2012)

  15. EU Challenges in scaling up companies Yet, the EU lags the US in terms of... Number and Employment share in large firms Large R&D spenders (Unicorns) EU US gap: micro and small vs. non-employer and medium/large Limits to growth...? Issue of scaling up Ability to accumulate resources

  16. Start-ups and scale-ups in AI, robotization, fintech Interest in high-growth, innovative firms Lack of systematic statistical evidence: Orbis (growth trajectory, but not innovation) poor coverage of even large, young firms; age bias CIS (innovation, but not growth trajectory) The selected few (Crunchbase, EU startup monitor, etc.) Focus on [innovative] M&As as a decisive moment in scaling up Focus on selected innovative activities (transformative, innovative enterprises)

  17. 1) Studying Innovative M&As as a potential indicator of start-up and scale-up activity Limits to company growth due to resource constraint: IPO M&A The EU dream = US dream = being acquired by google? test the feasibility of developing an indicator of innovative start-up and scale-up eco- systems based on mergers and acquisitions of young, innovative companies. Conceptually and statistically describe M&As in terms of their knowledge-intensity or innovation identify the age of companies involved (<=> consolidation of mature industries)

  18. A mapping exercise geographical location and industry ...of acquirers of EU companies Is there evidence of a rising share of technology acquisition from emerging countries (more specifically, China) or dominant US technological giants?

  19. 2) Study on the growth of robotics, artificial intelligence, fintech companies A supply-side approach: Which firms are the makers of the robots and what is their direct economic impact? Identify based on ... NACE codes? Where are they located? Identify their evolution (value added, sales, employment, productivity, internationalization)

  20. Questions What data to use? ...to identify relevant technologies? ...to identify relevant companies / sectors ? Does sector [NACE] have any relevance? patents? [corporate] Publications? Product exports? Other company-level data (ORBIS or special tabulations from NSOs?) Any experience in linking multiple sources?
