  1. Navigating Navigating the Future the Future V: Recommendations for the Recommendations for the Ocean Decade Ocean Decade V: Dr. Anne Dr. Anne- -Marie CNRS Research Director CNRS Research Director Navigating the Future V coordinating author Navigating the Future V coordinating author IPCC 6 IPCC 6th thassessment report lead author assessment report lead author Marie Tr guier Tr guier @EMarineBoard #NFVOcean

  2. Navigating the Future V (NFV) 19 leading European marine science experts identified key topics that will significantly advance our understanding of the marine, Earth and climate systems and that will be of importance to societal well-being in the next decade and beyond. @EMarineBoard #NFVOcean

  3. Navigating the Future V (NFV) NFV recommends a holistic, solutions-oriented marine research agenda that should be co-designed with all stakeholders and with the governance of sustainability at its core. Key knowledge gaps: The four-dimensional and connected ocean (a 3D space that changes over time) A multi-stressed and rapidly changing ocean Science of surprises (e.g. marine heat waves and tsunamis) Novel technologies, data and modeling for ocean research Sustainability science (transdisciplinary science at the interface of natural sciences, social sciences and humanities) @EMarineBoard #NFVOcean

  4. Sea surface temperature change: past and future @EMarineBoard #NFVOcean Source: IPCC, special report on Ocean and Cryosphere

  5. @EMarineBoard #NFVOcean

  6. A Clean Ocean Goal: Measure and minimize all marine pollutants. Understand their synergies and risks. Research Priority: Determine cumulative effects and interactions of multiple pollutants including atmospheric CO2, agricultural run-off, untreated wastewater, invasive marine species, plastic pollution. @EMarineBoard #NFVOcean

  7. A Safe Ocean Goal: Improve anticipation of ocean hazards including storm surges, marine heat waves, meteotsunamis, submarine earthquakes, landslides, and volcanic eruptions and their associated tsunamis. Research Priority: Study triggers and impacts of ocean hazards including how they are influenced by climate change. @EMarineBoard #NFVOcean

  8. A Healthy and Resilient Ocean Goal: A comprehensive overview of marine biodiversity functioning and its economic and societal value. Research Priority: An interdisciplinary research program on ocean connectivity and links between physical, chemical, biological, and geological ocean and humanity. Use the 4D structure and function of the ocean to guide its governance. @EMarineBoard #NFVOcean

  9. A Sustainably Harvested Ocean Goal: Determine safe and sustainable thresholds within which ocean industries can operate e.g. fisheries, aquaculture, biotechnology and energy. Research Priority: Integrate resilience strategies, trade-offs and ethics into decision support frameworks e.g. the common fisheries policy (CFP). @EMarineBoard #NFVOcean

  10. A Predicted Ocean Goal: Improve the management of marine ecosystems, climate forecasting and prediction of ocean hazards and their impacts. Research Priority: Improve ocean observations and data sharing. Develop the Ocean Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and cloud-computing. Feed data into interdisciplinary models to enable early-warning systems for multiple stressors, tipping points and ocean hazards. @EMarineBoard #NFVOcean

  11. A Transparent Ocean Goal: Deliver ocean data and information to all stakeholders to enable informed decisions. Research Priority: Develop a virtual reality ocean platform where data is available and processed in real-time. @EMarineBoard #NFVOcean
