Why we need to evaluate The membership of the governing body should focus on skills, and the primary consideration in the appointment and election of new governors should be acquiring the skills and experience the governing body needs to be effective Governors Handbook DfE Sept 2104 We want you to strengthen your schools professional leadership by appointing the right people to the right jobs. We used Governance Self EvaluationTracker GSET is a Target Tracker add on- which stands alone and can be accessed by all governors The tracker links Self Evaluation, Evidence, Improvement Planning and Reporting Annual cost around 265/year It is an interactive online tool that enables governors to carry out, record and regularly update skills audits and review effectiveness
All governors have individual secure log in Administrator adds users and can review use Once a review has been completed the data is available in several report formats, including action plan for improvements identified
So what does it do? There are 10 tabs 4 Areas for input of information:- Admin - users and school information Ofsted latest report headlines + report Portfolio for any documents of use to governors eg policies, data, meeting schedule, reports Calendar create own GB calendar, or link with Google calendar
Evaluations Skills - for individuals to input own skills, knowledge & experience etc Evaluate self evaluation of GB processes & effectiveness Strategic Leadership School Improvement Managing the Business Building Relationships Responsibilities Impact based on Governor Mark impact statements on School Improvement Partnerships and Community Engagement Pupil Wellbeing and Safety
Output Action Plans Statutory and Priority Action Plans Records and Completed actions Reports 10 reports collating data you have put into system Statutory Report Evaluations of all statutory elements Priority Action Plan-lists all areas chosen Self Evaluation Leadership & Management elements 20 questions -answers to APPG qus re Good Governance Essentials lists areas marked essential Summary Report brief summary of judgements Inadequate areas lists inadequate elements Governor Mark elements for GM standard Evaluation all judgements + evidence Quality Standards lists QS strands
How we use the tool Skills audit at beginning of year to identify skills gaps which we used after re- constituting to support recruitment of new governors Self Evaluation exercise Whole GB exercise + clerk + SLT Governors directly input judgements to GSET Working in groups we validated judgements Followed with a plenary to look at results Noted strengths and areas identified for improvement As FGB we identified priorities for improvement Used these to produce Action Plan for GB (alongside SDP) Will review progress in a year At the next GB meeting reviewed process and minuted our future actions
