Everyday Recovery Plan Here in the islands, we pay plenty of attention to disaster recovery information during Hurricane Season, but it does not take a natural disaster to create an IT data or equipment emergency. At any time, your personal or workplace information and files (or data) can be corrupted or lost due to a variety of occurrences.
Everyday Recovery Plan Contrary to popular belief, backing up is not the same as a complete recovery plan. When you back up, you have taken ONE step - but what about the hardware and network environment, software installations, system settings and licenses? Consider these 5 areas when building your Everyday Recovery Plan:
Everyday Recovery Plan Vulnerability Physical Damage Plan of Action Dry rot, temperature fluctuations, power outages, fire, excess moisture, mold, vermin, even dust or animal hair can result data loss. Pay attention to not only your hardware, but what's on it keep all settings, software and licensing info together. Security Flaws Your data may be stolen or lost due to an infection even with network security software in place. Stay alert for anomalies and keep subscriptions up to date. For business, it s highly recommended to invest in a paid suite for warranty and support. Human Error People make mistakes! Maintain copies of templates and teach others to do the same. It s important in business to create an environment in which reporting oddities, no matter how small, are handled swiftly and courteously. Theft or Loss Accidental loss, theft or destruction of hardware means the information on it is gone, too. Create system images, off-site backups, and develop a Software Asset Management (SAM) plan (or invest in a paid solution). Backup Failure Automated backup software or systems may not be operating correctly, and could produce files that cannot be restored. Periodically restore from your backup files as backup software can fail, even if there is no warning or indication of it. Redundancy is a plus; maintain more than one backup method. In case one fails for any reason, you'll have another option.
