  1. Romans Part 2 LESSON 4

  2. Review Main contrast in Romans 5 Adam and Christ. One act of disobedience brought sin/death to all men. One act of obedience brought righteousness/life to all men. Through Christ man is redeemed, reconciled and justified. Rom. 5:14 Death reigned from Adam until Moses. What changed? With Moses came the Law which showed us God s requirement for righteousness. Impossible for man. Law showed us our need for a Savior. Since the Law came, transgressions increased because we now know exactly what God says is sin.

  3. Evil and Sin When did sin enter the world? In the Garden when Adam and Eve sinned. When did evil enter the world? Before or after Adam sinned? Evil is impersonal. It is the consequence of rejecting God and His goodness which is a personal act of rebellion. It is anything that opposes God s will and righteousness . Satan was created in perfection. He experienced God in all His heavenly glory. He wanted to BE God evil he was cast out of heaven. Evil entered the world Satan Lucifer is an angel: created by God but NOT in His image. No soul, but with a choice.

  4. Evil and Sin Can both angels and man sin? Yes, by simple definition: missing the mark, a relational breach with God necessitating repentance and redemption . But man is offered redemption through Christ: angels are not. They are not made in His image, but they ARE created by God; supernatural beings. Did both have the very breath of God breathed into them so that they became a living soul/being, created in God s image? No. Gen. 2:8; I Cor. 15:45 This description is only given to man. Therefore, man needed salvation, which God provided through His Son.

  5. Romans 6:1-7 The righteous died to sin with Christ. IF you died to sin, how can you live in sin .even though there is grace from God? 6:3-4 You were baptized into His death; buried with Him; raised to new life. Baptize: baptizo to be immersed or submerged, cleanse by dipping, wash. An outward expression of an inward faith and commitment to follow Christ. Does baptism save you? If justification is the result of both faith in Christ and the act of water baptism, Romans 5:1 cannot be true. No. Baptism does not save you.

  6. Romans 6:3-5 We have been: Baptized into Christ Jesus Baptized into His death Buried with Him through baptism United with Him in the likeness of His death and resurrection Therefore, baptism is a spiritual identification with Christ It pictures the spiritual truth of our old self dying, being buried and our new self being raised to walk in newness of life.

  7. Cross-references What happens when one dies with Christ? What causes us to be able to walk in newness of life? Rom. 7:4-6 Being united with Christ in His death frees me from the Law, to serve in newness of the Spirit. 2 Cor. 5:14-15 Believers no longer live for themselves but for Christ Gal. 2:19-20 Believers died to the Law and live by faith Col. 2:20-21 Believers died to keeping a set of rules and regulations Col. 3:3 Believer s lives are hidden in Christ; identified with Him now 2 Tim. 2:11; 1 Pet. 2:24 Believers die to sin and live to righteousness because His wounds heal me. Death no longer has power over me.

  8. Old Self was crucified with Christ Old self/man: former, ancient, not new or recent. It is frequently used metaphorically to refer to the former way of life or the old self that is to be put off in favor of the new life in Christ. Old represented what was outdated or inferior. New symbolized improvement or transformation. Zod. The sinful and unregenerate self, previous to salvation, standing in contrast to the kainos qualitatively new, regenerate man that has a disposition or attitude which is created and cherished by the new nature Jesus gives to the believer. It truly means, our former way of life therefore, there must be a change.

  9. Cross References to old self Eph. 4:20-24 The former manner of life. Who believers WERE and how they lived BEFORE being saved. The old, corrupted self is laid aside and the new is put on. We are being renewed in mind = sanctification. Col. 3:5-11 Believers laid aside the old self with its evil practices at salvation. Laid aside : term used to describe the act of Christ disarming the powers and authorities. Put on : means to sink into a garment. From duno end of an era.

  10. Romans 6:6 Body of sin done away with What happens when the old self is crucified? The body of sin is done away with : body is used figuratively so this is not a physical body. Sin means to miss the mark. A body whose function is sin is described well in Romans 1:18-32 Done away with means brought to nothing, rendered inoperative; to deprive of force or authority. Result of this body whose function WAS sin, but is now rendered inoperative and has no force or authority? I am freed from sin. Rom. 6:7 I have a new spiritual identity

  11. What have believers taken on Life in Christ Raised from the dead in the likeness of Christ I have a new life and a new walk I no longer continue in sin because I am now dead to sin My identity has changed My old self is crucified with Him HE crucified it. No one can crucify themselves. It is all about what Christ did for me. I am no longer a slave to sin s penalty and power

  12. Questions you wrote down on pg. 36 Is my body of sin done away with, rendered useless, then activated again because I activate it? Because I pay attention to it? How come I don t feel freed from sin? How could sin enter the world thru one man, when Satan was already evil and existed? ** Just because Satan was evil, it didn t make mankind sinful until Adam chose to sin by disobeying and disbelieving God; man came from God and was made in HIS image; not Satan s.** Remember: Live by what you KNOW, not by what you FEEL. Use the obvious to understand/interpret the obscure.

  13. Romans 6:8-23 Commands Consider it so Put it to your account Reckon it impute it! Believers are dead to sin and alive to God. Reckon it! Live like it is so! Believers are no longer under sin s power. Reckon it! Sin is NOT your master. Impute it! When one is saved, born again, sin becomes a choice. Reckon it! DO NOT: let sin reign. DO NOT: obey its lusts and don t present your members as instruments to it

  14. Results of present yourself as a slave to righteousness Application Sanctification Eternal life with Christ Peace with God Justification Redemption and reconciliation I will reign in life through Christ I don t have to sin anymore I can walk in newness of life
