  1. ENGLISH IN INDIA ENGLISH LANGUAGE CAME TO INDIA WITH THE COMING OF THE ENGLISHPEOPLE. IT STARTED FROM 1835. LORD MACAULAY IN FAVOUR OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE.

  2. BEFORE AND AFTER INDEPENDENCE IT WAS THE LANGUAGE OF RULING CLASS. IT WAS THE LANGUAGE OF ADMINISTRATION AND LAW COURTS. LINGUA FRANCA (COMMON LANGUAGE) EFFORTS WERE TAKEN TO PROMOTE HINDI AS NATIONAL LANGUAGE. BUT ENGLISH CONTINUES TO BE A MAJOR LINK AMONG THE PEOPLE. IT USES IN INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND COMMERCE , SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE.

  3. THREE MAJOR AREAS THE STRUCTURE OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE. ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING. METHODOLOGY AND MATERIAL PRODUCTION.

  4. PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS WE FAIL TO ATTAIN THE OBJECTIVE. ENGLISH IS CONSIDERED MOST ESSENTIAL FOR HIGHER EDUCATION. BUT THE STUDENTS WHO COME TO COLLEGE WITH NO COMMAND OF ENGLISH. THE COLLEGE TEACHER HAS TO PROVIDE MUCH OF THE ELEMENTARY LEARNING.

  5. CONSIDERATIONS THE TEACHING OF ENGLISH IN INDIAHAS TO BE BASED ON THREE SETS OF CONSIDERATIONS; 1. SOCIOLOGICAL 2. PSYCHOLOGICAL 3. LINGUISTIC

  6. PROBLEM FACED BY THE ENGLISH TEACHERS LARGE, UNMANAGEABLE CLASSES THE UNREALISTIC SYLLABUS LACK OF PHYSICAL FACILITIES ( EG., LANGUAGE LAB ,LIBRARIES ETC.,) THE SYSTEM OF EXAMINATION . STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO PASS IN THE EXAMINATION WITHOUT HAVING LEARNT THE LANGUAGE.

  7. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF TEACHING ENGLISH TO ENABLE THE STUDENTS TO UNDERSTAND ENGLISH WHEN SPOKEN . TO ENABLE THEM TO SPEAK IN ENGLISH . TO ENABLE THEM TO READ IN ENGLISH . TO ENABLE THEM TO WRITE IN ENGLISH .

  8. FOUR LANGUAGE SKILLS LISTENING ,SPEAKING ,READING AND WRITING .(L S R W) RECEPTION MEANS UNDERSTANDING SPOKEN AND WRITTEN ENGLISH . EXPRESSION MEANS SPEAKING AND WRITING ENGLISH .
