Where to play badminton Clubs There are clubs all over the island and full details of the clubs and their contacts can be found on the Clubs page of the Isle of Man Badminton website www.iombadminton.com Manx Sport & Recreation (MSR) Schemes Friday 4-5 1 per session, no need to pre-book. No Strings Badminton Summer sessions Saturdays 9-11am at the NSC Secondary hall - 2.50 (July-Aug) Term-time sessions Tuesdays 5-6pm at the NSC main hall - 1 Children 2 Adults Isle of Man Badminton Association

Isle of Man Junior Squads Invitations to try out for squads will often be extended to players who have been observed competing in: - School tournaments, - Manx Youth Games - Junior IOMBA tournaments. Children will be invited based on ability, potential and age. If selected, all Squad Players are expected to: - Be a regular member of an IOM affiliated club - Enter a minimum of 2 competitive events one at current age group and one at the next age group. (E.g. Under 13 squad enters U13 and U15 tournaments) - Compete in all disciplines e.g. singles, level doubles and mixed doubles Isle of Man Badminton Association

  9. What do squad sessions involve? Each child is given the opportunity to develop with continuous assessment in the following areas: Technical skills - footwork and racquet techniques Individual fitness - speed, strength, agility, CV, flexibility Mental skills confidence, self-awareness, life skills Tactics Social skills Focus skills The coaches employ a variety of training methods which are constantly reviewed and adapted to suit the characteristics of the group in the hope of producing Island s next champions including (but not limited to!!) Island Games medalists and Commonwealth Games competitors. Isle of Man Badminton Association

  11. Off-Island Junior Squad Trips U12 s Saturday 14th May York U13 s Saturday 26th March Lothian U15 s No current county tournament at this age group. (See additional info on next slide) U17 s ICT 31st March-3rd April Nottingham How Players are Selected: The team manager for each age group will make their choices to ensure the strongest team by looking at known ability of squad players including their achievements in tournaments, commitment and performance in weekly squad sessions.   12. Other Off-Island Badminton Competitions Badminton England run a programme of competitions throughout the season for different age groups and at different ability levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold). The committee are looking at organising a trip to a Badminton England event for U15 age group squad players to compete in as individuals and gain valuable experience as there is currently no county team event at this age group. The association does also provide some financial support to parents who are keen to take children off-island to enter BE competitions. Isle of Man Badminton Association

  13. Island based Junior Invitational Tournaments These are when we invite other county junior teams to the Isle of Man to play in a 2 day event and host the visitors. U13 s Saturday 30th April/Sun 1st May York & Lothian Isle of Man Badminton Association

  14. Junior Squad Fees 2015-2016 Fees September December = 50 January April = 50 Parents will be emailed a letter with details of how and when to pay. Please note that it is important that fees are paid by the notified due date to ensure your child can continue to participate and be eligible for consideration for upcoming events. What do the fees cover? Court hire at the NSC Shuttles NO cost for the Coaches = FREE - Volunteers Isle of Man Badminton Association

Other Badminton Opportunities BE Young Leader Award BE Young Official Award Level 1 Coaching Qualification 16+ Level 2 Coaching Qualification 18+ Qualified coaches, leaders & officials will be able to get involved in a number of IOMBA events. IOM Sport & Sport Aid Elite Athlete Support and Development through the IOM Sports Institute: Financial support Sports Science support Strength and Conditioning programmes; Nutritional guidance; Sports Psychology support; Medical and physiotherapy support services; Performance lifestyle Guidance Support has generally been reserved for the most elite athletes but with the launch of the IOM Sport Aid Academy (due to occur formally on 30 September 2015), access to the Institute's services is expanding and badminton has secured places for 4 athletes for the upcoming year.   17. Parental Involvement Parental support is key to the success of any athlete and helping them achieve their full potential and we thank all parents for providing this. The IOMBA Junior Committee would also like to engage further with parents at an association level and this year the Junior Committee are looking to appoint: 2 Parent Representative Junior Committee members This position would involve: - Liaising with other players parents eg: hosting for on-island invitational events - Assisting with off-island trips e.g. U15s - Assisting at Junior tournaments - Fundraising - Offering general help or skills!! Fundraising Bag Pack Thursday 31st December Shoprite Chester Street Attendance & support from all squads is expected These raise valuable funds for the Association needed for the activities provided.
